I'm not a mother..but I saw soemthing that was so heartbreaking..
last thursday night-me and hubby were playing football w/the kids on my old block. while we were playing, i noticed 2 kids who were hanging out in front of a house, w/no adults. they were around 6 and 4 years old.
i was asking one of the kids I knew-where the adults were-n he had no idea. turns out, this happens a LOT. how could u even dare to think to leave your kids outside w/o any adults???? i didnt see anyone watching them from the windows either.
my mother walked over to them n talked to them and told them not to go in the street AT ALL.
it makes me so mad sometimes that certain ppl are allowed to have kids..while others try so hard for years and they cant conceive

Re: I'm not a mother..but I saw soemthing that was so heartbreaking..
That happens EVERY DAY across the street from me. There are 3 houses around me that the parents just let their kids run around all over the place back and forth across the street and nobody is watching them. The youngest JUST turned 6. My kids always want to go play with them, but I do no allow my kids to run around without supervision and especially back and forth across the street. They also allow them to run around the neighborhood in the woods, etc. and come out asking if I've seen their kids. IMO they're way too comfortable with allowing their kids to do that. I feel like a mean mommy not letting them play, but I just can't do it. I always think that"what if". Also, I don't have the time to just sit outside with them all the time either. Other parents just don't understand. They can think I'm a strict mom!

Re: I'm not a mother..but I saw soemthing that was so heartbreaking..
What were they doing?
I see my neighbors kids outside in front of their house all the time w/o the parents. They are 8 and 4. They are usually playing.
Just because you can't see the parents looking out a window doesn't mean they aren't. I know that when I'm outside with DD or even without her, even if my DH is in the kitchen at the window, I can't see him just based on how the light is hitting the house.
When I was 6 I was always playing outside, even if my mother was in the house.
The people who live behind me have to kids 8 and 6 and they are always outside.

You would be surprised how common this sort of thing is. My SIL told me there's a 4 yr old next door to her that rings her bell to play with her daughter, and then says "Should I go tell my mom I'm coming over?" She doesn't know you left????

Well, I know the layout of the house, I've been in it and right in front-is a big window and NO one was there.
I'm sorry but a 6 and 4 yr old should not be outside, walking up and down the block, on a extremly busy block, without any supervision.
I should prob also mention its a busy block in Queens.

I think it depends on your neighborhood. Seriously-our neighborhood( we live in NC) is like the 40's. The kids are various ages from 4-10. They run all over the neighborhood, through each others yards, etc. Every Friday night SIL and BIL bring their 6 yr old over and he does the same. I don't think it is bad....but then again-he is usually with a large group of kids

Okay, then I agree. You didn't mention in your OP that they were walking up and down the street. Just that they were hanging out.
But just hanging out in the yard playing, I wouldn't have an issue with it.
