I'm ready to kill DH
Whenever Joseph is overtired, he gets VERY, VERY dramatic.
We left the school's Family Picnic & Joseph was upset because he didn't get cake (well really he was upset because we were leaving the picnic). So we get home & he said to me, "I wish I never had any parents & that I could do whatever I want."
I said "That's it. You need to go to your room & straight to bed."
So he's sobbing in his room. I figured I would let him cry it out and he would either fall asleep or I would go in & give him a kiss later.
DH decides he's going to make it better. He goes in to Joseph's room, hugs him & tries to explain why he was sent straight to bed. Then he goes on to explain that "You shouldn't say that you wish you didn't have any parents. One day, mommy and I will be gone and you are going to miss us and wish we were here."
Um. AZZHOLE! He's gone to band practice & Joseph is still hysterical. He's sobbing, "I wish what Daddy said wasn't true, but I know it is...." "When I'm a grandpa, I'm still going to need you."
I brought up that it won't happen for a long, long time, I bring up the heaven angle thinking he's going to calm down a little bit. It hasn't worked. He' said it's still going to happen & he's going to need me. He's worried he's going to get to heaven & he's not going to be able to find me. I said, "Of course you'll find me. I'll be in your heart. When you get to heaven, I'll come out & give you a huge hug & say welcome to heaven."
Still not working. Now he's starting to talk about missing his ferret (that he NEVER met but knows died).
Sigh. Way to go Daddy.

Re: I'm ready to kill DH
Not to mention that Maddie is currently obsessed with death & freaking out her teachers.
She draws pictures of herself, hands them to me & says in a cheery voice, "I drew a picture of me for you."
I say "Thank you. You look very pretty!"
She smiles & say "Yes. That's so you can remember me when I'm dead."
Sobbing Boy & Wednesday Addams. What a combo. Wait until Joseph tells her we're going to die someday.

Re: I'm ready to kill DH
Poor babies
I remember being obsessed with death at around 4 or 5 years old. Can't remember if the was the open casket funeral I was brought to or watching the mom in Terms of Endearment die that caused it I used to sneak into my moms bed every night to see if she was still breathing or I would feel her for lumps. Other times I would swear I'd see my curtains fly up and people from heaven would come talk to me. I would go tell my mom that great grandma came to visit and what she said. I didn't even know her and it totally freaked my mom out.
She learned very fast what not say, do or let me watch. It too shall pass

What a sweet boy. He is really bright to grasp such a concept...Maybe you could get some books at the library, or maybe you shouldn't talk about it any more.....I'm no help!!!!!

Man that sucks! I know he was trying to help but I think men just don't get that things with kids can't be logical all the time. Sorry you're stuck to clean up the pieces.

Re: I'm ready to kill DH
Oh my GOD - he sounds like me sometimes!!! Poor Joseph - he's such a thinker as it is!!!
ETA - you should take out Fall of Freddy the Leaf out of the library if he still continues with this. If he doesn't, then just let it pass, but if he still gets upset, its a beautiful book and discusses death in a nice way for young children.... I may have it somewhere if you need it...
