Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

DS is 2yrs5mnths and is 24lbs 33in. He is very small and is under the 1%. He is even under 0.5% for his age.

The Pedi is not concerned and said we'll just keep checking him. He is healthy in all other aspects, eat extremely well and runs non-stop.

I would express your concerns with your pedi but if your DD is overall healthy then you might just have a little one like me Chat Icon

I'm really really worried about DD.

I don't think that's something to worry about, my DD was still just 18lbs (after not gaining for 4months) and almost 31 inches at her 12 month appt. She finally gained at 15months. And my DH is 6'2", I''m 5'9 so we're on the 'taller side' so you think she might weigh more.

She'll have a growth spurt soon I'm sure!

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

my daughter is tiny too. i have to check what she weighed at 15 months but now at 2 1/2 she is 24lbs.

she has always been in the 5% pecentile for weight and my ped is not concerned. she eats well, is healthy etc. i still give her whole milk and whole milk yogurt.

if as a mom you are worried or concerned though i would say get a 2nd opinion for peace of mind. it can't hurt.

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

If she is following a normal growth curve i would assume all is fine. She may be tiny, but she is growing. Some kids are just little. If she eats, is meeting milestones etc...i would not go forward with a GI like others have suggested. I don't think its necessary. If she were refusing food or throwing it up, then of course I would have it done. I am betting that just like my niece, she is a tiny but healthy girl!

My DD will be 4 in two weeks. She is only 27lbs. Most of her friends are around 40lbs and are already in booster seats. She is a tiny kid. Other than her newborn checkup, she has NEVER even been on the charts. I did have her tested for celiac disease because DH has it and one of the markers is being underweight. It was negative.

You could always get a second opinion or maybe just have them do basic bloodwork, but some kids are just small.

Until she was 3, I did add extra fats to her foods. (Butter with pasta, whole milk, eggs with cheese)

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

My daughter is also very tiny. She's 18 months and weighs 20 lbs and is 29 inches tall. However, she was a preemie. Her pediatrician says that as long as she's on "her" curve not to worry about percentiles. As long as your DD has been growing steadily and is healthy I don't think it's too much of a problem. However if you're that concerned then you should get a second opinion to ease your mind. My daughter was only 3lbs at birth which might also account for how tiny she is.

I'm really really worried about DD.

DD is thin. She's 5 1/2 and only 36 lbs. 42 inches. She's about 10% on the charts and always has been. The doctors look to make sure they are staying on the same curve. If the curve changes dramatically either up or down then they start to question.

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

My DD was (and is) always very petite. At 15m she was just under 21lbs (like 20.7lb) Ped wasn't concerned b/c she was following her curve nicely. Shes just going to be a tiny girl.
SHe's always been in the 10-12%percentile since shes born.

Now at 29m she's only 24lbs. But if you are questioning your Ped, thinking they're brushing it off then def get a second opinion!

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

My older DD was always tiny. At over four years old she is only 32 pounds and just over three feet tall. She's healthy and the Dr. Isn't worried at all.

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

I iddnt read al the responses, so i'm nto sure what all the dram is about, but my 15 mo DS is about 18 pounds and almsot 30 inches. my ped is not conerned at all, neither am I. he eats well, hes meeting all milestones, hes fine. hes always been skinny.
also, my 5 Yyo DD is 43inches and 34 pounds. she is really skinny, has always been, i jsut had her well vist, ped not concerned about that either. shes healthy, doing great.
if your dc is follwoing her growth curve, i really wouldnt worry.

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

My ped, and the ped. GI doc I went to said that as long as they stay on the same curve, they don't worry. Its when they start dropping in percentiles that they start to worry. DD#2 went from 25 to 10 to below 5 so they got very worried.

Re: I'm really really worried about DD.

My DS barely weighed 20 lbs at that age.. He was born 8lbs, 6 oz. He is now 33 months old and weighs a whopping 29 lbs..
I weighed 12 pounds at a year old!!! I made up for it!!!! Nothing work with smaller babies.. As long as she is gaining weight and staying on the growth chart, there really shouldn't be a problem..

My neices were very small. 16 lbs at 1 years old. They are 16 and 14 yrs old now and both taller than me at about 5ft9 in. While I would definately stay on top of it, try not to worry too much.

Just think if this continues she will never have to struggle with her weight - we are not all meant to be big! Chat Icon Chat Icon

This is a shallow remark to make. I guess starving children in 3rd world countries arent really malnourished but really destined to be super models

Small or big, I think we all agree that a child is healthy if they are following their growth curve. I was just answering in OP as to what *I* would do. If *my* DD were that small, *I* would get a second opinion. As I stated in my other post, I HAVE gotten second opinions from doctors regarding my DDs health when I was unsatisfied or uneasy about what they have told me.

I dont think anyone is being overly sensitive here; you are just being hypocritical by implying a bigger child has a "problem" while a small child does not. It works both ways.

Ds is 14 months and is 19 pounds and 30 inches. He is barely on the chart but is following the curve. He talks, runs and is doing great. I wouldn't worry.
