I'm really upset about missing a race and need advice.
I have just started training to run my first 10k in June. I've been so excited for this race because its what I believe is an attainable goal, but something I have to work hard for. DH asked me what the date was and we realized that we booked a trip a few months back to see his grandparents for their 70th (yes 70th) anniversary in Florida that weekend.
I am feeling sad that I screwed up the dates. I really want to run this race and I don't see any 10Ks on the NYRR calendar that I can do close to that date.
DH tells me to "ask for my money back" but I selfishly want to see if I can change my flight to go down after the race. Am I being totally unrealistic and unreasonable? It might not even work timing-wise....All I can think about lately is this race and how excited I am to do it. I don't know the timing of the party but I'm just trying to find a way to do both and he just tells me to "skip it."

First, I am really sorry. That stinks!!
However, I am on the side of your DH. I would just skip it. A 70th anniversary only comes around once. Races continue to come around. Plus, the trip was booked first and I wouldn't want to risk trying to go after the race. With the way flights get cancelled and delayed these days, I'd be worried about missing it.
I'm sorry it coincides. I know you are disappointed but it seems you are also partially disappointed that your DH doesn't seem more sympathetic about it. Maybe he doesn't know how much you were looking forward to it and is also just thinking about the family first.

Which race are you suppsed to run? I'm going to do a 5m in central park in late June. There is also a 10k for women only on June 11. The races become more scarce as the weather gets hotter, so I can see why you're upset, but I wouldn't skip the trip unless it was the NYC marathon. A 70th anniversary party is too big of a deal. We'll help you find another race!!

I agree, if it was a bigger race, like a marathon then I would agree with you. There are plenty of races, maybe do some 5k's over the summer and I'm sure there will be a bunch of 10k's to choose from in the fall.

Re: I'm really upset about missing a race and need advice.
Being that this is your first and you are really excited, I would want to try to make both.
is this the mini 10K? I have to say that it's a great race (I personally like racing with women only, since men sometimes get a little competitive and aggressive when women pass them)
If the timing works out I would try to do both, but I think the anniversary party should take priority. The good thing about a 10K is that you are not completely depleted from it for the day. Although you will have to get to a shower.
Does it have to be NYC? There's a 10K at Sunken Meadow and in Shelter Island at the end of June. and a 5 mile in Heckscher State Park in mid June

Re: I'm really upset about missing a race and need advice.
I understand completely where you're coming from...in May and June, the races always seem to conflict with some sort of family function, wedding, communion, graduation, etc....I do not think it's selfish to change the time of the flight if it means you can still make the party. If the party is Sunday, you should be fine. I'm guessing too it's the NYRR Mini. Great race...if it makes you feel any better, every year I did that one, it was hot as you know what!
Anyway, maybe you can work it out to do both. I have a similar conflict for the Brooklyn Half. I do not do many races since I have young children, and of course, the few I do always have to be the same day as something. My nephew's communion is the same day as the half. My brother (my nephew's father) insisted that I do the race regardless and just come to their party later in the day and not attend the church. I felt guilty and strange about it, but he and his wife insisted - and I guess they figured my 2 toddlers would not sit still in church anyway!! I lucked out in that the race is at 7am, so there is time. You might be able to change the flight. It's always a tough call when it's family. Hope you get to do it!!

You are right, since it my first 10K I was really getting psyched up about it. Yes, it is the Mini 10K and I have heard that its so much fun and was really looking forward to it.
I spoke to DH's mother and the party is in fact a lunch at her home on Saturday so unfortunately no flight would get me there in time. Sigh.
Re: races on LI, I am a member of NYRR and live in the city so I only know of NYC races, where can I find info on LI races?
Another thing I'm going to do is sign up for some other 4 and 5 milers around that time (the Israel run is the week before). I really want to make it to 10K but I think improving my timing on 4 and 5 milers will also be good for the time being.
Thanks for all your understanding.
