I'm scared I'm not doing this whole CIO thing right...

I have a TON of questions and I'm wondering if anyone can help put me at ease...

Ryleigh just turned 7 months old. Here's what I'm wondering:

1. Is she too old to be needing naps every 2 or so hours? She seems to get sleepy every 2 hours, but as is the case at this moment, she'll fuss for 1/2 hour or longer, leading me to questions whether or not she was tired in the first place...

2. If she fusses for a long time (i.e. 45 min. or longer), should I take this to mean that she isn't tired?

I'm trying to "beat" the nap by getting her down in the crib before she gets TOO tired, but when she fusses and fusses like this, I start to second-guess myself as to whether I'm forcing a nap on her before she's ready.

Every baby is different but DD stopped taking naps every two hours much earlier. At 7 months DD was taking two naps a day. One at about 9:30 am and the other about 1pm. Each were about 2 hours or so.

I don't know your baby but if she is fussing for 45 minutes before a nap, I would take that to mean she is not tired.

Re: I'm scared I'm not doing this whole CIO thing right...

I agree with the PP above for my DS at least. He started with only two naps/day about 4 months old or so. About the exact schedule as the PP mentioned. If she is fussing that long then I would say she is not ready for a nap. Try to push her first nap or middle nap (whichever nap you choose) back by about 15 minutes or so each day. Eventually you should get to a point where she is only taking 2 naps/day.

It's so tough. But it WILL work itself out, I promise...

I believe DD was long past napping every 2 hours at that point but she was transitioning from 3 naps a day to 2 naps a day - one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Liam is 6 mos and isn't napping every 2 hours. Ideally he should be taking 3 naps, but usually I get 2 naps out of him (one at 7-9AMish) and (one at around 2-4pmish)

This is pretty much what my DC do, but it is every two hours.
They get up around 7:30, take a nap at 9:30 = 2 hours or being awake
Wake up 11-11:30, take another nap around 1-1:30 = 2 hours

Wake up around 3 and then up for the longest stretch of time - 3-3.5 hours or so and then go to bed around 6:30.

Re: I'm scared I'm not doing this whole CIO thing right...

Sasha is just over 5 months, but she is tired pretty quickly-- I think it's mostly because she doesn't nap as long as she should.

Before I started putting her down after showing drowsy cues, she would be fussy ALL DAY. I thought I had a cranky baby-- she was just tired. So, I think being fussy for 45 mins COULD be because your DD is tired. Is she doing anything else-- yawns, eye rubbing, slower motions, etc?

Re: I'm scared I'm not doing this whole CIO thing right...

I never CIO. I don't believe in it.

I used my own method that worked for DS.

He went from having to fall asleep in our bedroom to be transfered to his crib to sleeping in his bed and doing full nights ever since.

This is EXACTLY what is happening with Ryleigh. When I put her down for a nap, she sometimes only sleeps 25 minutes. I know she isn't being awoken by anything external, because she's in her crib with the white noise on.

If I put her down for a nap right when I see that first sign (usually rubbing the eyes), she'll fall asleep within 20 minutes, usually--but it's never without a good amount of fussing.

Re: I'm scared I'm not doing this whole CIO thing right...

DS is 10 months and still takes two LONG naps every day. every baby is different and he still has days where he needs to go back to bed right after his morning bottle!

i let DS fuss for an hour or more for naps. he is manipulative Chat Icon and if i go in and get him he will want to play! so in he stays until he falls asleep. if i can't take the fussing i run the water or take a shower or something.

i don't put him down until he rubs his eyes - that is his tired signal for me. if he is fussy, he is already overtired.

are you looking out for her tired signs?

Re: I'm scared I'm not doing this whole CIO thing right...

Ok, so here's how our day went today:

7:45: Up for the day

9:30-11:30: 1st nap (I was SHOCKED that she slept 2 hours, not like her at all...)

12:45: Starts showing signs of being tired. Down for 2nd nap, takes her until 1:20 to fall asleep.

1:20-2:00: 2nd nap

3:30: Showing signs of being tired AGAIN, put her down for nap, she fussed for 10 min. and has now been sleeping for 15 min.

So, looking at how the day went, the problem is DEFINITELY in the middle of the day. She definitely seemed tired, but...should I try to push that nap later so that she's going down for a longer nap earlier? Chat Icon I just don't want her to melt down from being too tired.

Yes--rubbing of the eyes is usually the big one. Sometimes I get a yawn.

I think the biggest issue I'm having is when she DOESN'T show the signals. Like before, I took her for a quick ride in the car (had to pick up a prescription). She stayed awake and happy. Before that, she had been playing, happy as a clam.

Then when we got home, I put her in her high chair and she started fussing pretty quickly. She never yawned or rubbed her eyes, but her eyes looked very red underneath (always a sign that she's tired) and she went right down for her nap.

I think she just likes to keep me guessing Chat Icon

Re: I'm scared I'm not doing this whole CIO thing right...

My day is similar to yours, her morning nap is a definite, the mid afternoon nap has been dwindiling lately and becoming much shorter, she has now been sleeping for over an hour since 3ish so I think I'm slowly transitioning her to 2 naps....She wakes up between 6 and 6-30 and goes down for her first nap bet 8 and 830 then a mid morning/early afternoon nap and then the 3 nap....but again, the mid morning nap is getting shorter and shorter...yesterday she fussed the entire time for the mid morning nap so she didn't take it and was fine and happy so I think it's her cue to tell me she's not tired when she fusses without falling alseep....but again every baby is different...

Personally, here is what I would try to do...

I would push that middle nap back by about 10 or 15 minutes at a time until it is right at the time for the third nap.... Does that make sense?

i agree with this. DS naps every day from 9-12 and again from 2-4 or 3-5 depending on what we do.

it sounds like she needs more of a schedule Chat Icon

JAZ is on about 2 a day too. One at about 10-10:30 and he is napping now. He is up at 6:30 EVERY morning, (even Sunday Chat Icon )

Beth, he rubs his eyes and makes these skeeky fussy sound and I just drop him in and leave. He will fuss for about 10 mins and give up and fall asleep. Good Luck with miss fluffy pancake!!!Chat Icon

It sounds like that middle nap is too early. After taking a 2 hr nap, it is unlikely she will be ready for another only an hour and a quarter later. If she wakes up at 11:30 I would think she'd be about ready for a nap around 1:30 - which is when she actually fell asleep. I think maybe you put her down before she was tired. Sometimes my babies yawn or rub their eyes pretty soon after a nap, but I don't attribute that to being tired. I yawn and rub my eyes after I wake up too.
I look for those signs ALONG with spacing out. When they start to space out or get cranky, I know they are tired.
Also if she wakes up from a nap after 25 minutes, do you try to get her back to sleep. If I only get a short nap like that, I'll give them the paci and then leave them for 15 minutes or so to see if they fall back asleep. Usually they do.

My schedule can be all over the place too, but it is becoming more predictable.

I have tried going in there just to give her the paci, and she will fight to stay awake, and then I wind up having to do CIO with her all over again.
