I'm so excited*updated, need advice*
I posted last week that I was looking for a black lab to adopt. Well DH and I decided any lab would be great so after lots of searching on petfinder I found a dog (choclate lab mix) who was just posted today. The shelter just got her in & I filled out an application & the lady there called me & left a message about doing a phone interview & setting up a meeting date. I'm waiting for her to call me back.
Do you have any questions that I should ask her before the meeting? This is pretty new to me & I'm a little nervous, but so excited. I'll try & post a pic, it's not very good but she looks cute

OK, so I spoke to the woman who rescued these dogs. They were going to be gassed. Luckily she got them in time. She has no idea of the history. Just that it"looks" like a chocolate lab and most likely a mix of some sort. She has only received her parvo shot. I would have to bring her to the vet to get the rest of her shots, spade, etc. That's not a problem, I'm just wondering if this is typical of getting a rescue dog. I ask because I also looked for dogs with LAbs4rescue.com (through petfinder) and they just seem to be very thorough. Their adoption fee is $100 more, but they do all the shots, spade, etc. I am confused which route to go and would love any advice you could give me. Like I said this the first time I'm adopting and I want to make a good choice. TIA!!

Congrats on adopting a shelter pup. Rescue dogs and shelter dogs rule.
Questions to ask at the MEETING should be- When and where was the dog vetted? Make sure you know the puppy's past history. Where did she come from, any medical problems, etc.
Ask to get a copy of her vaccine history.
Make sure to ask if the shelter offers free or low cost spaying/neutering(unless she will be fixed prior to adoption).
About how big will the puppy get?
Which play toys are good for her to use?

Only one of my rescued dogs already had all it's shots, and the rescuer kept him longer because he was so small. His adoption fee was larger to cover that cost though, so either way I did pay for his care. Some rescue orgs get a lot of donations, and don't have to charge such a high adoption fee. My adoption fees have ranged from $65 to $500, so it all depends on the dog & the org. If you are ever doubtful though, you can check out a website called guidestar.org & it lists the activities of all registered 501(c) charities & report any misuse.
The spaying alon can cost up to $400 if you do it on your own, so it is up to you if that $100 is worth it. Also I'd take into consideration travel, etc required to get the dog to you.

Ask if they require unannounced home visits once the dog is at home with you.
Ask what the timeframe allowed is to get the dog altered.
In addition, they should tell you about their policies if you need to re-home the dog. I am not sure I would ask, but most reputable orgs will let you know upfront that if something happens & you absolutely cannot provide proper care for the dog, that they will take the dog back to ensure it will not end up in a bad home ro a shelter.

I don't believe it's unusual to have to get a resuced dog their shots and spaded/fixed. I know I did this when I adopted from NSAL and Brookhaven Muni Shelter.
I think the best thing you can do, is meet the dog if possible. She if the personality meshes with yours. I definitely see lab in that pup but it is a mix.

IM SO EXCITED for you!!!! Hes adorable. I would say make sure you have a fenced in yard and if you work someone to come by and walk/feed him at lunch. I got my baby from petfinder this past summer! CONGRATS... hope all goes well. UPDATE US!
