Chat Icon But you know, its a double edged sword around my house. My DH thinks he's Mr. DIY and save a few bucks, and my house is one unfinished project after another! It never ends. I wish I could just hire someone to clean up his messes!

That is great! My DH was not handy at all when we first moved in and I was on top of him any time he did something. Now, he's a regular handyman!

The grass is always greener on the other side. My house is full of half started projects and probably will be forever.

Our kitchen is half ripped out, my rooms are half done

So while I love the fact that this is what my husband does, it doesnt always have its perks

I'm the handy one in our marriage! DH gets jealous that I have a tool box with tools, so everytime he goes out to a store, he buys his own tools because his wife shouldn't have more tools than him! BTW - all those tools are still in their packages, in the shopping bags and sitting in the garage!

Oh mine is just as bad! We've probably had more work done in 4 months than many on this board have ever done. My FIL is a kitchen designer... he can design the kitchen but don't ask him to do much around the house. George does all of his installs along with plumbing and electrical. I joke with my DH that evertime I look at my new kitchen and baths I fall a little more in love with GeorgeChat Icon

Thank God for George and his son BrianChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I'm so impressed and jealous of those of you who can do so much around your homes!

My DH is very knowledgable and handy.... too much so. He will not let anyone else do jobs in the house and when they do, he criticizes them to no end, and how he would have done a better job, bla bla bla....so, yeah nothing much gets done because
a. - he is a perfectionist and will not do anything quickly
b. - he works from 6am to 8pm and also a bit on weekends so he doesn't have the time to do anything
c. - he won't hire anyone else because he can do better.

Basically it's a no-win situation. We have the $ to hire people to do work but he won't hear of it. ..... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I guess the grass is always greener....it would drive me nuts too if we had a bunch of half done projects.

That would be me. I am not very handy at all. I can do very basic stuff.... and I mean BASIC. Thats about it.

Any type of manual labor or tough project and its not for me. Chat Icon My wife hates this... she says since "I am not a homeowner... i MUST be doing these things".

I don't buy it because not every homeowner is handy. I am sure there are plenty of homeowners out there that just pay to have things done.

Thats why I am glad I make a decent living. My wife is probably more handy than I am... so she is Mrs DIY. I am simply called "The Wallet". Chat Icon

DH has no idea how to do anything around the house. I fix everything, hang shelves, etc. I love doing it, he's useless when it comes to home repairs, I have my own toolbox and everything! Chat Icon

Re: I'm so impressed and jealous of those of you who can do so much around your homes!

You'd be surprised what you can learn when you have to.

We had no heat on the second floor - DH learned all about our system online and fixed a pressure problem.

Sink dripping he figured it out and fixed it.

Valve leaked he crawled into an eave and found it, we found a replacement part at Home depot. ($12) We realized our heat pipes in the eave weren't insulated so while he crawled in to replace valve I wrapped the pipes.

Huge quote from Locksmith for all new (very high end) knobs and locks so we researched, found online for less than 1/2 the price and then he learned how to install with more online research and some posts to a Usenet group.

After all the rain last Oct DH installed gutters by himself - house had none, and it made such a difference.

We need a new fence and we are now researching and trying to decide if we will do ourselves or pay someone.

So far we've only had to pay a plumber when we had a gas leak and someone to remove some old oak trees.

Yes we've made some mistakes and had to redo some steps and for many projects we get better as we go along.

We knew NOTHING before, we learn as we go along, with a lot of help from the Home Depot 1-2-3 books - the basic one is such a great book for a new homeowner. We're also now fans of "this old house" and have learned quite a bit from that too.

I agree with all of this. Researching how to do a few things around the house can save some serious cash! I am so happy that DH likes to do things himself (well most of the time I am happy...there are those half done projects though)

Re: I'm so impressed and jealous of those of you who can do so much around your homes!

I can do basic plumbing, electrical, remove wallpaper, hang wallpaper, paint and spackle, changed door handles and locks, handle power tools, I hang everything in the house, I've made French memo boards to replace these 40+ year old speakers that were fitted into the walls of our den, installed baby gates (including this huge one that cuts half our den off so she can't get at the tv, computer and stereo), I removed most of the paneling that was all over our house, I'm learning a lot! Plus I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I can do something myself.

But he is like DJPill, he just has no interest in it. He works long hours during the week and doesn't like to "waste time on this cr@p" on the weekend. Oh well, at least I enjoy learning it. Just wish I had time to learn more.

Although he did help me remove the above ground pool that was here when we moved in, powerwash the house and repaint it. It's a start, right?
