I don't know about the best, but from all the reviews I have read, they seem to lean more towards the kindle touch then the original nook. I would stay away from the color ones because the screens are like computers, and it will cause eye strain. Go to best buy, look at them and try them both.
Best wishes for a quick hospital stay!!

I find this to be completely untrue. I love my color.
That said, I don't know much about it but the Kindle Fire looks pretty darn good.

I have a 1st gen Nook (the old white one) and a Nook Color. Love them both.
I think both Nook and Kindle are great devices, but if I were buying one for someone who isn't tech saavy I would get the Nook product because if they have questions they (or you) can take it into any Barnes & Noble and have an actual person explain and demonstrate on your device.
If you think he just wants it for reading books, I'd get the Nook Simple Touch ($99, black & white screen). If he'd also want to read magazines, surf the web and play some games on it the Nook Color ($199) is great. If he also wants to watch shows & movies you'd have to get either the Kindle Fire ($199) or the Nook Tablet ($249).
They say Hulu & Netflix apps are coming for the Nook Color but I don't know how long we'll be waiting for those.

I have the color too, and while I love it if I read for too long my eyes do hurt. But they do when I'm on the computer too long too. Guess I'm just more sensitive.

I have a Kindle2 (it's about 3 years old) and I absolutely love it. Its very easy to use, and easy on the eyes as well. I think that a basic level kindle would be perfect.
Personally, I don't need my kindle to surf the internet or do anything extra...that's what my iPhone/iPad/computers are for.

My brother got the kindle when he was diagnosed with cancer from his coworkers. He reads that and surfs the web when he's in the hospital each week for his chemo treatments. It helps keep him calm and deters him from why he is actually there. Plus, it gives him something to gab about with the nurses.

My MIL has the Kindle and loves it. She's not tech savvy so I'm not sure if she would make use of one that could go on the internet. If you think he might be able to surf the net with it then get either the Kindle or Nook that goes online.
