How old were you when your DC(s) were born? Do you wish you were older or younger, or are you happy with the age(s) at which you gave birth? What do YOU think is the best age(s) to have children and why?

DS was born at 31, this next baby will be born at 32. (13 months apart!) Chat Icon
I think no matter what age you have your children, it is the most wonderful, fulfilling experience in the world. A former co-worker didn't marry until 37, and she had her kids at 39 and 41. I also know someone who had their first child at 22. We are all great mommies who are head over heels in love with our children. Chat Icon

To me, the best age to have a child is when you are emotionally able to handle it. Financially able to handle it too would be nice. I was 29 (almost 30) when I had DS and I think that was a good age for me.

I picked 31-34 'cus I feel there's so much to learn and experience before you tackle parenthood and before you hit 35.

Not to say there's anything wrong with wanting to be a parent earlier or later than that.

Im 33
DH 35
we just had our first (two days after my bday)

if I had married earlier maybe I would have tried earlier.. been married 5 years this month. I don't regret waiting... we had a GREAT time being DINC (double income no children) and I love my daughter but wouldnt trade it.

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

I voted 23-26.

DH's parents were 19 when they had him, and my parents were 38 and 36. We had two VERY different experiences growing up. DH's parents were lots of fun and full of energy, but not very mature. On the other hand, my parents were older and didn't have the same energy and time they had when my sister was born (my sister is 10 years older than I am).

I had wanted to start having children slightly younger than I am now...I will be 28 when DD arrives.

I will be 23...same age as my parents were when they had me...these days it's considered young, but I think it's a great age Chat Icon

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

I really don't think there is any "best" age to have a baby. I met my DH later in life, I'm 37 now, will be 2 months shy of 38 when I have her and my DH is 43. I don't think because we are "older" we are too old to be active with our children. You should see the way my DH is with our nephews, you'd think he was a kid himself.

Everyone has their own idea as to what age is perfect for them to have children.

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

1st- 18- wish i was older, but it worked out just fine.
2- 25- perfect
3- ill be 27

I say it over and over, im happy i had (having) my children while im young, i have my health, and the engery (although not much at the moment) to keep up with them. Financially, its tough, but i think it would have been at any point in my life.
I would have been finished with college, had i not had my kids at such a young age- but i never gave up, just going when i can, and when im done, ill still be young enough to have a great career.

These types of statements get under my skin. I'm older, but I have my health and energy to keep up with kids. My SILs are older than I am and have young kids and they too have their health and energy (heck, my one SIL has 4 kids, is 40 and will most likely have another one)

Why do people think that if you are older you won't have the energy to keep up with kids?

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

It's completely different for everyone -
I will be 30 when this baby is born and part of me is STILL panicking about
'giving up' my freedom Chat Icon

I think each person has to do what they feel is best for them -

Personally, I think the biggest mistake ANYONE can make is insisting on a time frame for their life, regardless of everything else

ie: I HAVE to be married by 25, HAVE to have a baby by 28 etc etc -

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

It really depends

Physically speaking I think 23-30 is the best time.

For me ,"maturally" speaking, my early 30's would have been better.

I had DS in my late 30's. I was ready mentally, physically, financially and in a loving relationship.

I wished I had DS before but I did not meet DH until I was 35 so things don't always work that way.

I was in a horrible relationship in my 20's and I don't think having a child during that time would have been wise. I had a lot going on and a baby would have been not such a good idea.

So true! I am 39. DS is 15 months. So like you, I was 37 when I got PG. Trust me! You stay young when you have kids. We go out all the time. I am NOT too old to walk for hours the Bronx zoo or the NY aquarium. Chat Icon

I'll be 22 when I have our baby boy, can you see who voted where Chat Icon ... Do I think its the best age? I think for me it defiantly is! But everyone is different, I will have finished my degree, and my DH has a very good job, and we own our own home. We are emotionally, and financially ready to have a baby. I find it just a blessing I found my husband so early in life, and am able to start our family now Chat Icon

Although I hear alot of grief about it, I wouldn't change what I have for the world.

I think it totally depends on the person.

I had my first at 27. I didn't want to start until 30 but obviously there were other plans for me. Chat Icon I'll be 31 when my 2nd arrives and it feels just right.

My SIL had her first at 25. I certainly was not ready at 25 but for her, I think it was perfect. She was so ready to be a Mommy and she is very good at it.

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

Physically I'd probably say 27-30 but I voted for 31-34.

I was already 27 when I finished graduate school and wanted to get a decent start on my career before starting a family. I feel like the early 30's is a good compromise of still being physically healthy to have children and developing your career.

I will be 32 when DD is born and I think it is a good age for me. I really enjoyed my 20s, had lots of experiences that I would never have had if I was a Mommy then. Also, I didn't meet my DH until I was 28, it makes sense that this is the best time for me.

DD was born when I was 32. Yes, I wish I was a couple of years younger. I hope to have one more by the time I'm 35.

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

I didn't read the question to the poll, I answered based on your question in the post. I was 33 when I got pregnant with DD and 34 when I gave birth.

However, I think the best age is when you are emotionally and financially ready to be a parent. I don't think that happens at any certain age, I think it can happen earlier for some and later for others. For me, it was important that I be married and in a solid place in life before we brought a child into the world. At 33, we felt we achieved that.

I am 24 and a newlywed. I am in no way ready for kids yet (I graduate law school in may, and would like to be able to work for a few years and travel with DH before we have kids). I'm hoping to get pg with our first Chat Icon in our late 20s.

We're just not ready yet!

Re: I'm sure this has been asked a millions times, but I'm curious!! (With Poll)

I was 24 when I had my first DD. I was unmarried and got pg from a boyfriend. He and I split.

when DD was 4 and I was 28 , I met my love boat.

I went on to have 2 more girls and I was 31 and 32 years old.

Everything was prefect timing. I believe it was all in the cards. If I didn't decide to have my DD I would of never of had the beautiful family and marriage I have now.
