Re: i'm watching SWEET HOME ALABAMA...
I hear ya. I never thought I'd feel this way, but having grown up in a small town in an area where everyone knows everyone, I miss it too.
I have noticed it even moreso since having DS. I take him out for walks after work around my neighborhood here on LI, and hardly anyone says hello.
I also get sad when I see all my old friends who still live in the area I grew up in, on Facebook, all posting about getting together regularly and hanging out with THEIR kids.

Re: i'm watching SWEET HOME ALABAMA...
That's funny, I watched the same movie last night too and all I kept thinking was "damn it, why couldn't *I* have married a glass-scupture-making-NOT-starving-artist-hottie like Jake Perry (aka Josh Lucas)?!?!
I kid, I kid... I love my DH. Really.
Seriously, though. There are some towns like that here on LI.
I see it in the area I live in and where my husband grew up - Miller Place, Rocky Point, Sound Beach area.
They're very small SDs where everyone knows everyone and people who grow up there, seem to stay there.
We're a prime example. My DH was born and raised in Miller Place, the furthest town he moved to was Manorville and that was only for a couple of years.
We're now in Rocky Point and I'm sure if we decided to move back to Miller Place, he'd be fine with it.
To this day, he STILL is in touch and good friends with his friends from high school. He's 41 (soon to be 42 - hee hee, I always throw that in!! )
It seems to me the common thread for you guys is that you all don't live where you grew up.
I'm sure if you could move back to the town you grew up in, you'd feel differently, however maybe someone who didn't grow up there but lives there now might feel differently. KWIM or am I just rambling here?!

Re: i'm watching SWEET HOME ALABAMA...
I actually did move back to the town I grew up in! I grew up in Long Island City (some people never ever heard of it, right next to Astoria, last neghborhood before you're in manhattan)
Anyway, I moved back here after 20 years after I got married last year. There are so many people still here! I mean, ppl are coming up to me and saying "I remember when you were a little girl, etc." It's pretty cool. And I feel like everyone looks out for everyone. I can't walk down the block without saying Hello to at least 5 people.I absolutely love it and am so excited to raise our child here!
