I'm in a pickle too.
Right now I'm on COBRA... DH's new plan which is supposed to start 8/1 doesn't have any OON bennies.. The peri I'm seeing is only OON. They said since I'm half way there that they'd take the continuation of care bennies the new plan offers.
I have the paperwork faxed over but no idea how long a determination will take.
In the meantime, I have my level 2 at the peri next friday- which will probably be 3K? 5K? I'm nervous now that I should just buy Cobra for another month, essentially doubling up on care so as to at least have the level 2 covered.
If the new insurance doesn't take continutation of care, then I think I may be able to stay under the cobra plan- but not sure if I can stay solo- just paying for me since the Cobra is under DH and he'll be under the new company's plan. The Cobra bill said something about staying on due to pre- existing condition.
But-I don't know if I can hop on the new plan in January once the Cobra runs out. I know the new DC will be able to b/c that's a qualifying event.. but not sure if I can.
Either way this is going to be $$$ b/c the new plan is high dedutible...
I despise dealing w/ this and b/c it's through my DH's job.. he has to ask and it drives him crazy!

I believe the qualifying event allows you to hop on. Me and my dh both have the same plan but never made it family because it is the same price either way. When one of us add DD it makes a difference because then we will be paying one family plan and one single, so I am adding my dd and dh to mine and he is dropping his.
ETA: when I asked HR about this they said I just have to bring in DD birth certificate within 60days and the coverage gets backdated.
