In terms of your kids' ages, what's the latest you would move/change schools?

I'm not talking about moving for a once-in-a-lifetime type opportunity, I mean moving for regular reasons- better house, better commute, closer to family, etc.

I ask because I am wondering if we'll be able to sell this house before DD begins kindergarten in 2 years and the idea of making her move once she's started school makes me feel guilty even though it would be to get us closer to my family.

We changed schools in Kindergarten, but stayed in the same house. I'd say by 3rd grade, I wouldn't want to unless necessary (ie once in a lifetime opportunity).

I never changed schools so I don't have any experience with it. I'm sure it makes kids a little more social because they'd have to be to make friends in a new school.

9th grade

my sister was in 10th grade when my family moved...she was on path already with HS credits and had to go to summer school to stay on path with new school.

she was an extreme case, she wanted to be top of her class to be awarded college scholarship.

dh and i were both moved around. we feel it is a beneficial thing to experience, compared to our cousins who have always lived in same house, same school, same friends.

before 8th gr I had been to schools in 3 different states, a few different cities.

DH same story.

We are both super adapatable, making the adult move to NC was completely doable for us.

I moved a lot as a kid because my dad was in the military. IMO, up until high school the moves were not bad and it was easy to make new friends and feel a part of the community quickly. I moved to LI the summer before my sophomore year of high school and never really felt comfortable until October/November the following year and I finally found a small group of kids who were welcoming of me.

Part of it might be that everywhere else I lived I went to public schools where at least half the kids were military brats so the community was more used to people coming and going a lot. It seemed like most of the people in my high school had known each other since elementary school and weren't so quick to add another to their group. Or maybe I was just being a typical overly sensitive teen and reading more into things.

We moved a lot before I was in 4th grade.

I would say any time before middle school/jr high would be okay-although I would love for DD to have friends that she's known since daycare/preschool so I'm not looking to move if we can help it.
