In this market, what % do you think is a good raise

I have to admit I was kind of shocked at my review yesterday. They only gave me a 5% raise, when I feel I went ABOVE and BEYOND the call of duty.

Do you think I am over-reacting? What is a good percentage in your book?

Quite honestly, that's the MAX of what I've gotten in every law firm I have ever worked at.

not getting a cut is good in this market.

I go above and beyond even more so now and we are laying off..people will take less money this year here.

I have never gotten a 5% raise even in a good economy. So I think thats good.

in July I got a 2% raise......I guess I should be very greatful....I got a raise and i have a job.

They just laid off 60 people a couple of weeks ago

My company just cut the standard raise from 4% to 2% across the board for 2009, so I'd say 5% is great in this economy...

An AWESOME raise at my company, in any year, is about 5%. Average is around 4%, usually a bit lower....

I think 5% is exellent! It's definitely more than the averege merit increase in my company!

I agree, its a very good percentage. Most departments have a "ceiling" % that they can't go above for raises, too. Do you have a bonus scheme at work? Perhaps your boss is looking to reward your performance with incentive pay vs. salary?

I think 5% is excellent in a good economy. This year they told us no one is getting raises at all. Maybe small bonuses....maybe, but that's it.

To be honest- 5% is the most I've gotten in GOOD economic times... I'd be VERY happy with that!

IMHO, I would be happy with ANYTHING...I am just glad I have a job

That said, I work in Financial Services and last year, I got a 10% raise and 20% bonus

I got 4% plus an extra merit increase...I doubt I would have gotten the 4% had it not been negotiated by our union prior to these financial woes. I'd be very pleased with 5% in these times (or really, any times!). I get 3.5-4% a year, plus an extra merit increase ranging from 1-2%.

I think it depends on what the norm is for your company and industry. And also, if they are cutting back in general.

If you normally get 10 or 15% raises and all of a sudden got a much smaller one with no explanation I would be upset.

Well it depends on how your company is doing, if they are struggling as bad as most companies are rigth now, and most I think are barely keeping their heads above water then yes 5% is a very good raise.

But if your company has somehow escaped the effects of this economy and they are doing great than I think 5% is just not such a great raise.

IMHO in this economy with the way companies are slashing jobs i would be grateful to have one and be jumping for joy to get a raise on top of it. 5% doesnt sound too shabby to me.

i think its a good raise. the ecomony isn't great so its a big deal to still have a job and be able to get a raise.

I got a raise in July and it was 13% but I took on a ton more work prior to my raise so I went in to my review with an outline of all the new stuff I had to take on, making sure I would get what I deserved. It worked out. But I don't expect to get more then 4-5% at my next review.

I agree with above posters.. I'm not even expecting a raise this year.. will be happy to just not get cut! so 5% is great! Congrats!

For the past few years, my company has been giving only 3% raises across the board, so in this economy, I'm just happy I still have my job!!! I'd be super happy to get a raise again this year and if it was 5% I'd be even happier. Of course, if you're used to a much higher raise, then I understand why you're disappointed, but remember that unemployment is at a super high rate right now and people are still losing their jobs - I'd take the 5% raise and look at the positives right now. Congrats!
