Indian wedding

My friend s marrying an Indian guy, she's not Indian but is having the whole traditional Pakistani wedding...it's a three day affair and for day two she wants us (the bridesmaids) to wear traditional Indian Sari's or whatever they're called....I feel silly even trying one on, and the ones I saw online look like they're made for a size 6, and I am no where near that....anyone ever been to an Indian wedding before? I need suggestions on what I should wear!! Chat Icon

If she is marrying an Indian man it will be a Indian Wedding, not Pakistani. Chat Icon

Second of all, my DH is Indian and their weddings are VERY traditional. The Sari's look small but basically you are wrapped up in it. So dont let the size fool you. Also they take these ceremonies very seriously. Search online or check out LIW there were a few Indian brides on there. The Saris are absolutly beautiful and anywhere in Queens is a good start. Try Ozone park, they have a huge Indian/Pakistani community there.

Ditto! It's lined with Sari stores, lots of beautiful stuff there!

a sari is basically one size fits all, it's the blouse that you have to get custom made according to your measurements. try jackson heights--you can definitely find a sari for under 200 bucks. but definitely negotiate--don't pay the sticker price!

Re: Indian wedding

There are a ton of places that make and sell Sari's on Broadway in Hicksville also.
Personally, I think the whole Indian wedding tradition is amazing. They really celebrate every aspect of the wedding and I think it's a wonderful way to start a marriage.

I was just a bridesmaid in an indian wedding in August. It was the same situation as yours - she isn't indian, he is, but it was a traditional indian wedding.

I got a great Sari (pink and green) on roosevelt ave in Jackson heights. It was not that much $$$$

Re: Indian wedding

From what I gather, it's a 3 day event and she wants us to wear traditional clothing the second night (sari) and then a bridesmaid gown on the third and final night

Yep Jackson Heights Queens is the way to go. I know weddings can be a drain on the pocket so start saving now!

I also wanted to add that I have always wanted to be invited to an Indian wedding - I want to wear a sari so bad. I think they are absolutely beautiful.

Enjoy!

You could always opt out due to finanicial reasons.
But I think you will look beautiful in the sari

My DH is Indian, I am not, at first the whole sari thing is intimidating but they really are beautiful dresses. It is the top that needs to be bought or sized based on your measurements but the dress it self is just fabric wrapped around you. I agree with the PP jackson Heights is the place to go, and when you go to buy offer half of the asking price and negotiate from there.

ETA: Picture #2 that you posted is a true sari, the other dresses are different I think they are called lenguas

Re: Indian wedding

Won't the Bride be shopping with you?? That's not something I'd be comfortable choosing for myself either -
Maybe her FMIL or someone in his family who is familiar with the customs will join you as well -

Other than the additional financial burden, I wouldn't stress over it - I'm sure no one expects you to KNOW all of the customs and "proper" behavior ......It's probably a learning experience for your friend (and possibly even her FH) as well !!
