induced coma...
for those who have had a loved one in an induced coma, how long did it take? How long was your loved one under? My father has been under since last Thursday. He was not a healthy man to begin with and he drank a lot and smked. They are slowly taking him off sedation, but he doesnt handle it well and he has to be put back under. I am starting to fear the worst. My mother is too sad for words. She is doing a good job of hiding it though. I would just like to know if there is hope at the end of the tunnel. It kills me to go visit one day and he is moving around, still out of it, but less sedated and to go back the next day and he is still. Because he didnt do well breathing on his own and such. Thanks everyone.

Re: induced coma...
this happened to my brother. He was in an induced coma for a long time and they would try to take him of of sedation and see how he responded.
There are many reasons to keep him sedated but it keeps him comfortable for now and is probably the best for him.
Why did they do this to begin with?

He had a perforated bowel. His abdomen was a mess when they opened him up.

Re: induced coma...
My dad was sedated and intubated for several weeks. They had to attempt to take him off the vent several times before he was able to really come off. The first few times he wasn't breathing well on his own but they managed to get him off of the vent.
We thought he would never come off of it. Thank God he was able to.
I hope your dad gets better soon!

So he was septic? Sounds serious but I guess they are waiting for him to heal more? It may just take some time.
