Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
Guangzhou, China (CNN) -- Dogs bark and whine behind high chain-link fences, some of them gnawing the wire so hard they bleed at the mouths while cats packed into crowded cages cower in fear if anyone approaches.
This isn't a pet store -- it's a meat market in Guangzhou, a city in southern China where eating cats and dogs is common practice.
At the Han River Dog Meat Restaurant in central Guangzhou, diners can choose from a long list of menu items, including dog soup, dog steak, dog with tofu and more. In the kitchen, the chef chops up meat for dog hot pot, one of the more popular dishes. Most customers like it spicy.
"Dog meat is good for your health and metabolism," explains Li, the hostess who declined to give her first name. "In the summer it helps you sweat."
Should cat and dog meat be banned?
But these local restaurants may have to find a new specialty. The Chinese government is considering legislation that would make eating cats and dogs illegal.
Professor Chang Jiwen of the Chinese Academy of the Social Sciences is one of the law's top campaigners. "Cats and dogs are loyal friends to humans," he said. "A ban on eating them would show China has reached a new level of civilization." Gallery: Cat and dog meat in China I would never eat dog meat --Louisa Yong, cocker spaniel owner
Eating dog meat is a long-standing culinary tradition not just in China, but also Korea. Cat meat can be found on the menu in China, Vietnam and even parts of South America.
The Chinese government has signaled a willingness to take the meat off the market. To avoid upsetting international visitors during the Beijing Olympics, officials ordered dog meat off the menus at local markets. Officials in Guangzhou have warned vendors to stop selling it ahead of the Asian Games which will be held there later this year.
The ban on eating dog and cat meat is part of a larger proposal to toughen laws on animal welfare. Individual violators could face up to 15 days in prison and a small fine. Businesses found guilty of selling the meat risk fines up to 500,000 yuan ($73,500.)
The legislation is gaining support from China's growing number of pet owners. With living standards rising and disposable income growing, more Guangzhou residents are investing in house pets.
"I would never eat dog meat," said Louisa Yong, as she clutches her pet cocker spaniel. "It's so cruel!"
Meat vendors have a different view.
"The dogs you raise at home, you shouldn't eat," said Pan, a butcher who also declined to give his first name. "The kind raised for eating, we can eat those."
Many of the dogs and cats sold for meat are specially raised on farms. But Chang said there is always a chance they're someone's lost or stolen pet.
In anticipation of the new ban, dog and cat meat has become more difficult to find, though some vendors say they will keep selling it as long as they can.
"The legislation will definitely affect our restaurant," said Li. "We'll just wait to see the result."
And it seems restaurants don't necessarily need to change their menus anytime soon. According to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the law prohibiting cat and dog meat could take as long as a decade to pass. Until then it's a la carte, from the cage into the kitchen.CNN (edited for link)

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
While I would be horrified to eat dogs & cats, this is a delicacy in their country that has been going on for years.
It seems they are looking to change their tradition, for fear of "offending" international guests for the Olympics. If you visit a country, you have to respect their traditions and culture.
I would not begin to try and tell people what they shouldn't eat, because it is something that might gross me out.
In Peru they eat guinea pigs -- and it is a VERY popular item. Should it be banned because we keep them as pets sometimes here in America? It's a delicacy that they enjoy, and have enjoyed for years.

Rabbits are also pets/food In India, cows are sacred In Israel, pigs cannot be eaten
I'm not sure if every country has to change their traditions because other countries don't do something.
I definitely don't like the cruelty aspect of what they described, but that goes for any animal.

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
Some countries (one of which is china) kill their meat in the most horrifying way. These people boil or put in hot oil alive animals (dogs, cats, turtles, birds, etc) this is not a quick death. Some of them are pulled out scorched and still alive while they are butchered up for the next step.
As far as guinea pigs they are slaughtered prior to being cooked (usually throat slit) now to me that is better then being thrown into a pot of boiling oil.
I have many issues with japan, china, Vietnam, Korea on their choices of killing endangered animals with no remorse even after being informed that these animals are rare or endangered. They slaughter sharks for fins and throw the rest in the ocean, slaughter whales for certain parts and waste the rest and kill other animals with no shame while hunting whales. Turtles are becoming rare in most of those areas because of being eaten and not having a return to nature for some (need for turtle farms) - I am not a vegan or some scary hippie but these nations are no longer one of the poor struggling nations. Most of them are thriving hubs and economic powerhouses that have adopted to the "western" lifestyle for most part and I truly think it would be a better trend to stop using dogs and cats as meat.
- i wouldn't outlaw it though - but put laws against the preparation of such animals. In the US you can not kill cows by pushing them in tubs of fat and fry they alive, nor chickens.

In Israel, pigs cannot be eaten
In Israel, pigs CAN be eaten.... Those that follow the laws of kashrus (being kosher) do not eat pig. I don't live in Israel and while I don't keep kosher, I don't eat pork.
When I was in Israel, I came across a number of non-kosher restaurants that served pork.
It's not the norm... but it's not something they just don't do in Israel.

No I don't think it should be banned.
There are plenty of animals that are eaten that are pets in other countries. There is a food chain.
If it were humans, then I'd have a problem with it.

In the US, we boil Lobsters alive-just as bad and I don't agree with any of it.
Though I could never look at a dog or cat and think "food"-that is because it is not our way/custom.
What I do have a problem with is what I've read about pet stealing-some butchers/restaurants steal peopls pets and butcher them.

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
I agree with OP's that said there is no need or reason to ban it if its common an accepted in China.
But the inhumane treatment of these animals, and any inhumane way of killing them is what is disgusting to me. I feel the same way about a lot of animals we eat in the US, but this hits a little closer to home because I have a dog that I love more than anything and I picture her sweet little face when I read the description of the dogs and cats in the beginning of the article.

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
I don't agree it should be changed.
Meat eaten in France:
- Rabbit (not pet rabbitt) but farm rabbitt - Horses. Less fatty than beef and considered a more high end meat - Frog (legs only) - Snails
I will pass on what other "delicacy" are made of. Like Foie Gras called "pate" by some.
Just because we don't eat cats, does not mean other Countries agree with what we concider acceptable eatable meat.

I am not sure if you are aware how animals are treated in the US.
Have you seen how chicken are raised in the US? Do you know how they die?
Do you know how they kill pigs? Pigs scream BTW. It's a horrible sound!
It's not pretty!

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
I refused to eat any meat when I went to China for this fear (also rats). thank goodness for eggs, peanuts (kung pao chicken) and soy beans!
I have a hard time ranking animals in importance, but at the same time I'm not a complete vegetarian...I'm so torn.

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
Well, that's what those people eat... it has been their custom forever... Just because we don't agree with it doesn't mean they need to stop doing it. We don't see Indian people coming to this country and trying to ban cow meat consumption, do we? And really, how is a cat or a dog better than a cow or a chicken raised just for our dinner, or a lobster being boiled alive for a gourmet treat?
BTW, I never ever order chicken in Chinese restaurants. It is SO easy to use something else instead of the chicken... Shrimp is shrimp, can't make it out of a cat!

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
Its the cruelty of how they are put down that bothers me. If there was a more humane way then keep your custom but the way these poor animals are stuffed in tiny cages, boil alive or skinned alive ( I have korean friends) is just terrible. I remember years ago watching faces of death and it broke my heart even here in the us of what slaughter houses look like. farm raised animals for food in one thing, but pets, I dont know I just cant bear it.

Re: Inside the cat and dog meat market in China
FWIW, my DH spends a lot of time in China (including Guangzhou) and said it's not as common as we think. It was definitely more common in Vietnam, but it's not like all the Chinese restaurants (here and in China) serve dog under the guise as other meat.
Besides, you'd know if you were eating it. He says it tastes like chicken, but the dark meat, not the breast/white meat. It's much more gamier.
Man, if people only knew what my DH has had to eat so as not to offend people in their own country! (Scorpion, Turtle Soup, Dog, Snake, you name it!)
