Instagram / Facebook question
I got rid of FB almost five years ago. I do currently have an Instagram account that I use basically just to follow celebs, fashion accounts, dogs  stuff like that. Very few real life people - just like DH and a few family members. No one from any of my schooling or work or anything.
Now on my Insta it's slwsys suggesting people to follow, and it's clearly based on people I was FB friends with literally ten+ years ago.
I know FB owns Insta - but are they seriously looking at my friends on a FB account that was deleted five years ago, and basing suggestions on that?? There is no other connection to these people that I can think of...
It's just annoying because I'm a private person and my Insta is really just to goof around - not have friends and make connections.
I loathe FB and now I feel like I can't even have an Insta account in peace!

Where does it show you people to follow? I have Insta and FB but I don't have my Insta connected to FB.

When I scroll through my IG feed it will have a bunch of suggested people in a horizontal bar right in the middle of my feed.

Ive never seen that on Instagram only on FB.
Maybe they are connecting it through your phone contacts or pages you have in common?

I see that as well on Instagram. It does seem like most are from fb, but I think some are from contacts as well.
If you click on settings it says "invite" & under that is Facebook. Then under that it says "follow people" & under that it has Facebook & contacts. You can check to see if your Facebook is somehow still linked?? But as long as you don't add these people then you can keep your insta how you want it.

That's so weird that not everyone has it! It started on mine a few weeks ago with one of the updates.
Some people I can see the connection - but others are just so far removed it's crazy. Like a guy i interned with once for about two months in 2005ish, in a different state. We were briefly FB friends back in the day and that's it. I'm thinking it has to be old stored connections from my deactivated FB - which is kinda creepy and annoying!

My IG does this and its not connected to a facebook because I don't have FB. BUT it does it based on either people I follow that it thinks we have in common or based on something I may have clicked on in IG previously.
I kind of hate it and find it annoying because then obviously it must be suggesting my ac to these people as well. Even when you make acs private its not really private. I feel like nothing is.

Create a new IG acct with fake name/email. Avoid logging in via FB. Problem solved.

Mine does it, so annoying. It even has sometimes popped up with "you have 153 facebook friends on instagram" with each person's page. I don't have both linked although I used to.  I'm not sure what it uses though, my co-worker showed up as a weird instagram account about loving sharks (?). LOL. I ended up asking her about it one day and she was mortified - apparently her little sister has the instagram but it somehow linked to her fb and she can't figure out how to unlink it. It literally shows "Debby Downer (fake name) is on insta!" and links to the shark fanpage

Just sucks that i have to create a fake email address just to use IG five years after deactivating my FB account. I feel like once you deactivate your account they shouldn't be pulling info from it anymore. But I guess this is the world we live in.
I am def not logging in through FB, haven't logged in to FB since closing my account in roughly 2011. I am logging into IG directly through IG.
ETA - i should have originally said that I only created this IG account last year. So I never even had IG when I had a FB account. The fact that IG is suggesting friends based on an old, closed FB account - just because I must have used the same email for both accounts? - is crazy to me.
