Installing Hardwood Floors
We have hardwood floors in our living room (10x30), and we knocked down a wall that is an additional 120 sq. ft. that flows into the living room.
We got estimates to refinish existing and adding new in the 120 sq. ft. space - first estimate was $3,500.
so now FH (who is VERY handy) is looking to DIY, because when we looked at prices for 450 sq. ft. of new prefinished flooring it was only $1500, so we are getting ripped with installation.
Has anyone DIY before? was it hard? TIA!

Re: Installing Hardwood Floors
DH did it and all he needed to do is rent the special nail gun from Home Depot. The trickiest part is where to start and then you have to pay attention to the layout also because you want stagered seems. It took him 3 days to do.

Meaghan,
My dad did all the wood floors in his house. I will see him later and ask him where he got the wood from and let you.

Re: Installing Hardwood Floors
Our neighbors did it themselves and they look BEAUTIFUL.
I think if your DH is handy that it should not be too hard at all.
I agree with the above poster that you need to be careful with where you start and stagger the wood. Our builder told us it was easier to install wood floors than laminate floors. (not sure if that's true or not).
Good luck! Post pics if you can

Re: Installing Hardwood Floors
My DH has laid Bruce prefinished hardwoods at my parents house and did Pergo in our spare bedroom & unfinished oak in our livingroom/diningroom(we finished it ourselves). They all came out gorgeous!! If h is handy then he can def handle the job himself.

Re: Installing Hardwood Floors
For Materials check out Lumber Liquidators they have a place in Hauppague. I have seen them used all the time on TV Shows. We are getting our laminate from them because they are very reasonable, and they have good quality materials.

We bought brazilian cherry from home depot expo. They actually were having a sale on it and we paid $4.99 a square foot for 3" wide planks. We orginally placed an order with Lumber Liquidators and waited 10 weeks for them to tell us that Brazil wasn't releasing anymore wood.

DH is also very handy and did ours himself. They came out great. I'm so bad, I forgot where we got it.
