Insurance Question - IVF
I just activated my IVF benefits.. The only exclusions to my benefits are genetic testing, donor eggs and surrogacy. My question is, is genetic testing something that is normally done during IVF? Is this something we should pay for to have done or has everyone else just went without this? Just seems like if you are going to go through all this you might as well make sure the embryo is fine. Just wondering what everyone else did, or maybe I am being crazy again
Thanks girls!

Re: Insurance Question - IVF
I had genetic testing done after I suffered two miscarriages. My RE wanted to make sure that me and DH were compatible before we continued.
Our testing wasn't covered by insurance and we paid about $1,200 for it. Everything came back negative so it gave me peace of mind when we started up again.

Re: Insurance Question - IVF
The night of our intial RE consult my DH asked about it. RE doesnt recommend it unless there is a specific concern as it can damage the embryo

Re: Insurance Question - IVF
a co-worker had Genetic testing done and she had to pay $5,000. She had it done because she had recurrent miscarriages, and she was older. It is AMAZING what they can do though.

Re: Insurance Question - IVF
I dont think you will need it unless theres a specific reason to assume there might be a problem. And its not normally done no...

Re: Insurance Question - IVF
There are two types of Genetic Testing... If you are doing IUI, they will run blood tests to test for genetic defects in both partners. If you are doing IVF, they will do PGD on the embryos. This means they take one cell from the embryo and test if for any and all genetic defects. PGD is generally based on the amount of embryos you have to test - for me it would have been $8000 - $100000.
Unless there is reason for it, most RE's will not recommend it.
Donor Eggs will be the same thing, unless there is reason to believe you have a problem making quality eggs the RE won't recommend it.
As far as surrogacy, it's not legal in NY so it's a moot point.
