Insurance question

We've decided it would be best for me to quit my job so now we have to go on DH insurance. We're being told that because it's a high deductible plan that prenatal visits aren't covered at all until we meet our deductible. I thought with the new healthcare laws prenatal appointments are covered.
Also I still have two more ultrasounds scheduled because of an issue they found and they need to make sure the baby is measuring correctly. Is there anyways to fight this? I mean at this point my doctors are recommending the ultrasounds it's not like they are elective.

As I understand it, maternity coverage is mandatory, but only certain preventive things are covered without cost sharing. So, some lab tests are covered fully, but others aren't. For ultrasound, I'm not sure if any are considered preventive or not, but something they do because they found an issue wouldn't be preventive. For the usual office visits, I think those are preventive, but I wouldn't know because of the way the OB bills - a charge for 1st visit and everything else lumped in with delivery. I did have to pay something for the first visit - not sure why that wouldn't be preventive.

If your DH's office has other plan choices that would be better for you, maybe you could switch. I think a spouse leaving a job is a life event.

My prenatal care is 100% covered but for ultrasounds, even when I had the SCH I was responsible for my copay. As the other poster said, I would see if your DH can adjust his plan since this would be a life event. Also are you quitting your job before or after you have the baby? If it's after I would stay on your insurance and just not return after maternity leave (as long as you don't have to pay that back) for me, my maternity leave is my own time so I could use my time then not go back.

No I'm quitting before. The plans at his job are both high deductible the one he's looking into is more expensive but we have a smaller deductible



Does anyone know if I go on Cobra if I can just include myself and not have my husband on it. We were originally on my health insurance

If you're leaving your job, you can go on COBRA, but COBRA is not cheap. It would likely be $1k+ per month PLUS paying for whatever copays, etc you would normally have to pay. It's probably better to go on your husband's insurance. Or even better, don't quit your job until you're further along (or you have the baby).

My husbands job changed insurance when I was 7 months pregnant (January 2015) to a high deductible plan and we were responsible for paying for all medical expenses until we reached the deductible amount which was $3500 after that we had no copays apart from prescriptions for the remainder of the year (so from March on after we had our daughter, we had no more expenses). You pay the negotiated rate for everything so we got billed after they submitted claims to the insurance company and the approved amount was determined. Before you quit your job I would make sure that this is a financial commitment that you will be able to financially handle with no hardships.

I would make sure that ALL of your doctors and the hospital take your husband's insurance - mine didn't take the new insurance but since I was due in less than 8 weeks by law they were required to cover us but it was a headache since we had to get an exemption for all caregivers at my doctors office and you don't realize everyone that bills you from doctors to pa to radiologist plus we had to get approval that any of them could deliver me at the hospital.
