Interesting Law & Order tonight....totally Parenting related!!
Did anyone catch Law and Order tonight? It was about not vaccinating your child and the risks that go along with it.....

Re: Interesting Law & Order tonight....totally Parenting related!!
I was just going to post this!
I think it is a little far fetched that they could arrest a mother for not vaccinating her child. As "guilty" as that mother may be for not vaccinating her child (which I believe is her right as a parent)...the young mother who's child died is just as guilty in my opinion of not getting her child proper medical care. She said her daughter was crying and had a fever. Instead of bringing her to the dr. or hospital, she smacked her and went back to bed.

I told DH while we were watching that it was going to start a s*it storm on every parening board on the internet
Honestly though, I thought it was pretty far-fetched. How come nobody put any blame on the mother with the fussy child with a horrible rash who just hit her kid & went back to bed? Had she gotten her child medical help maybe she wouldn't have died. think they were really reaching a bit.

It was totally ridiculous. The case would be thrown out immediately, because there are no laws that would allow them to arrest the mother.
Why wasn't the other mother arrested for negligence? If she had brought her daughter to the hospital the outcome might have been different.

I didn't see it, but completely agree.

About 10 years ago, California ruled that a mom could be prosecuted in the death of her 4 year old and that was after a 2+ week illness, where she prayed rather than look for medical care.
Putting a child back to bed after she woke up with a rash is something any parent on here could do.

She pled guilty to criminally negligent homicide for her role in the child's death.

I agree. Especially if you saw the pics of the rash on the girl -- it wasn't an all-over body rash.
I'm not excusing the young mother for spanking her baby and putting her back in bed to cry all night though.
I thought putting the mother on trial for murder was a stretch, but I can also see how it is a social health issue. The child who died was not old enough to get the vaccine so she could not be protected, and even if her mother did bring her to the doctor that night, she may still have died since there really is no way to treat it.
I realize that everybody has a right to choose what to do for their child but you have to know that you are potentially putting other people at risk as well.

And I think that's what the show was trying to say....not that everyone has to vaccinate their children or they'll be arrested. But to realize that the implications of yoru decision CAN have an effect on others. As far fetched and outrageous as the story was.

I loved that show, even though there was a lot of dramatic license taken... it really made me think about the whole issue... Oh and did I mention we were at a SUPER crowded park yesterday so it made me just a teensy bit paranoid about everything DS could've been in contact with (I also loved the *tension* between Liv and Elliot on the vaccination issue, given that E has a newborn at home!)

I agree, I saw the episode and was going to post something about it.
Something I never thought about is that when you choose not to vaccinate, you leave others who are not vaccinated (either by choice or because they are too young to be vaccinated, such as the girl in this story) at risk too. So, it's not just your child, but those that your child comes into contacted with that you are exposing to these diseases.
In the show, the unvaccinated child spread measles by using equipment at a park. I don't even know if that is possible but it begs the question: if you go against the advice of medical professionals and choose not to vaccinate your child, should you then be forced to restrict your child's access to public parks, etc so as not to increase the threat to the public?

See and while I agree with their position and your position as well...
I can ONLY imagine how irrate the other side of the view would get. It was a little to far fetched for me...
I dont think when parents choose not to vaccinate that they are thinking "let me kill other children"...they are thinking about autism and all that entails. Like I said, I am on your side trust me...I did everything the DR told me to do BUT I wouldnt call the other side murderes...thats just wrong.

That's what I thought also. The whole MMR thing threw me for a loop.

I am bumping this thread in light of the current measles outbreak and this thread currently trending on FHF. Not to mention the fact that the episode re-aired on USA network today!
