Interesting read Re: CIO - Woman Uncensored Blog - "Just Let Her Cry"
I had mixed feeling about the author and her POV after I read this (not sure if it's made the rounds here yet).

Interesting read Re: CIO - Woman Uncensored Blog -
Wow. There are so many people who believe that CIO is cruel. Yet, there are tons of grown humans out there who were raised with this method, and most of us are well adjusted, productive members of society. To be honest, who even REMEMBERS crying in a crib when they are what, 9 months old? I don't remember much of my middle school years, let alone my infancy. I did not do CIO with my boys. But I don't think they are any better off than the children of parents who did choose to do it.

I understand what the author is saying, but the truth is it is healthier for babies to get sleep. I would not leave my son crying if he were hungry or really really upset, but when he just doesn't want to go to sleep, he is left to cry a bit. Then, he sleeps and all is good.

I do not know if any method is "better" than the other, but I know lots of adults who can't sleep w/o a sleeping pill, glass of wine before bed, or need the TV on to fall asleep, etc...I worked at a pharmacy and the amount of people on ambien or similar is alarming, I'd like to actually see research on the amount of adults who were raised on CIO as infants who have sleep issues now. Maybe there IS a correlation?? (Or maybe it's completely unrelated...but an interesting thought).
I did modified CIO w/ my 10 month old and it worked after 2 nights, but I wouldn't do it with a baby under 6 months, but that's just me.

Interesting read Re: CIO - Woman Uncensored Blog -
I also wonder how it effects people as they get older do they trudt their instincts or are they generally insecure? Codependent? Do they look to something or someone to tell them how they feel? Do they have underlying issues with their parents?
I did not do any form of cio. I personally cannot listen to my dd cry hysterically for me and just tell her she doesnt really need anything. How can I tell another human being what he/she needs? I wouldnt do that to my husband or a friend so why would i do that to my dd? They cry for a reason and i want my dd to trust her instincts. I also want her to know she can always count on me if she needs me.
I also think of it in these terms... how do you sleep? Every single night you sleep a perfect 8 hours? Or do you have restless nights sometimes for no real explanation? Do you ever have nights you have trouble falling asleep? Or you wake up hungry for some reason even though you ate well all day? Thirsty? Do you wake up and sometimes your belly hurts? Or your suddenly hot? Cold? Leg hurts? Well why is not possible the same thing happens to babies? Toddlers? And that the only way they can express this is by crying. I just personally think its unrealistic for anyone to think a baby or toddler will sleep perfectly every night consistently Always without going through phases or have a bad night or 2.
With all that I dont think its abuse to do cio to each is own. But its not for me personally. I also dont think its healthy for a child to never sleep. Or wake up every hour. Parents deserve sleep to.

My mom did not do CIO with me at all - in fact I slept in their bed for years- and I have trouble falling asleep. It takes me forever to fall asleep most nights and if DH is out of town I need the tv on to sleep. Maybe I never learned to self soothe
I just think everyone is different and it probably has little to do with CIO. My DH is out before his head hits the pillow!

I agree with all of this. I can't do CIO to my kids; it is too upsetting for me. Although I do understand those who do it, and obviously people, including both parents and children, need sleep.
BUT, I thought this "article" was terrible. She presents a purely fictitious scenario as real, and assumes that an adult's experience is the same as a baby's. No research, nothing to back up what she is saying other than her imagination.

Re: Interesting read Re: CIO - Woman Uncensored Blog - "Just Let Her Cry"
What bothered me so much about this article is that although the author makes valid arguments, her attack on parents who choose this method is appalling and totally unnecessary.
Saying that those who do CIO are choosing not to be parents at night... WTF?!
I did not have to do CIO with either of my children, but I know from others how difficult it is. She makes it seem like these parents are sitting pretty and sleeping well in their cozy bed as their children scream and cry in the next room... typically, the parents are in the next room crying too!
And how she compares it to a sick adult... please! This article made my blood boil.

Re: Interesting read Re: CIO - Woman Uncensored Blog - "Just Let Her Cry"
While I think this article is harshly written, I do see her point. I did not do CIO with my boys until they were 10 months. Then they cried for 15-20 mins for 2 nights and slept great after. I would not let my baby cry for 2 hours. I dont think there are tons of Mom's who do, but to each, their own.

Yeah, I don't really buy it. Either her husband is really a jerk, or this is totally made up as a bizarre way to make parents feel badly about doing CIO. I honestly couldn't even read parts of it bc all I could think is that it's not true or if it is, she needs to leave that guy. Either way, it didn't make me regret my choices for a second.

She clarifies at the bottom... " I want to make it very clear, for the sake of my friends that may be rather concerned now, that the above story is only half-true and was given a different spin for the purpose of making people think. I was unfortunately very sick and helpless, but my husband would NEVER neglect or abuse me in such a way. I did want to make people think though. If any other helpless person (sick, injured, elderly) were treated in the ways described, people would be disgusted. The fact that babies are often "trained" in such a manner proves that babies are still viewed by many people as lesser beings with invalid needs and feelings, even though the care-taker probably doesn't realize that is what they are doing. "
