Interesting situation at Stop and Shop today...
Ryan (13 months) and I were minding our own business walking down the aisle. When this cute little old man walked past us. He stopped. Looked at Ryan. And said "Hi there little boy, can you give me a high five?" And stuck out his hand.
Ryan, naturally, pulled away being very shy. The man then says "That's right little man, you don't talk to strangers".
So I gave a half smile/nod and kept walking.
I wanted to say "So then why are you, Mr. Stranger, trying to engage in a conversation?"

Re: Interesting situation at Stop and Shop today...
I was actually walking DD and this man with a stroller (no baby in it) passes by me and asks if mine is full. He came walking over to me to look inside. My mommy radar set in and I was about to either run away really fast or punch him really hard, then run away There are some real weirdos out there

Besides that...I hate the idea that people think nothing of letting a baby Hi 5 or grabbing their hands......and knowing FULL well thathand gets put in the babies mouth 2 seconds later

maybe he just felt funny after he saw the baby's reaction? That's one thing about having a baby that I don't like...having strangers talk to you!

Re: Interesting situation at Stop and Shop today...
It's funny because I was told a story, a guy about my age went hiking in the woods in Ecuador and founds these kids in the mountains in a hut by themselves...................................................................................................I'm going somewhere with this I promise. ......................................................so he struck up a conversation with them and learned about their parents and where they went to school and what not. I couldn't help but think, if he were here and started a conversation with a couple of kids, people would think he was a child molester or some creepy guy.
My point is, we have been so tainted by creepy people that we don't recognize when strangers are just being nice. That little old man is probably just lonely and shopping is his time to get out and see people.
It's sad, because I would probably have the same reaction as you.
Just went on a tangent, sorry.

Aww, I'm sorry, but I think that's just an old man being a cute old man. I've never minded when older people talk to Ava because it really does make them happy. I tend to see the same man a lot when I go food shopping and he always says hi to Ava and when she ignores him, he always responds with, "Atta girl, still not talking to strangers!" I think it's cute.

I wouldn't have a problem with the old man - I see people like that and they remind me of my relatives that have passed on and how lonely they must have been when their spouse had passed on and the kids are living their own lives - KWIM? Babies and kids have that special innocence and sweet nature that just make people feel good...
Even younger people, I'm not worried about at this point. Maybe I should be, but I'm not....

Well, maybe he just said it b/c he didn't want you/Ryan to feel bad b/c he was shy, KWIM?
Like sometimes when people try to engage Christopher and he hides behind my legs, people will say "oh mama's boy, huh?" or osmething dumb like that.....

I agree! I think that was just his way of smoothing the situation over.
As much as I don't like elderly people TOUCHING my kids (why oh why must they all try to touch babies?) I really don't mind when they try to engage the kids or high five them etc. I think of my own grandma and grandpa, and always wonder if maybe they're just thinking of their own grandkids, or maybe they don't have any of their own, or they live far away, or they're just lonely.

Re: Interesting situation at Stop and Shop today...
Maybe I should have mentioned that I wasn't actually spooked out by the old guy. Just thought it was interesting after trying to engage in conversation his motto changed to "stay away from strangers".
And although there are definitely freaky/creepy people in this world, Stop 'N Shop is not where I would be most intimidated with about 100 other people around.
