Re: internal exam pain?
Depends on where the baby is in your pelvis the higher the baby's head is the more painful the exam because the deeper they have to go. Of course the lower the baby's head the more painful your labor is probably getting so its a no win situation.

Re: internal exam pain?
really I thought the lower the baby's head the less painful labor would be..I thought it would be faster.

No many woman complain about the tremendous pressure they feel when the baby is very low and putting pressure on the perineum even if they have an epidural. However, there is less pushing involved usually.

Re: internal exam pain?
it's not that bad.....it's for a few seconds. You might experience some cramping afterwards or spotting

Think about it this way - it's NOTHING compared to labor

My doctor told me that this is happening to me now. Every time I have been sitting and then stand up or walk around it hurts. He told me it is the baby's head putting pressure on the perineum. I have not had internals yet and I am getting scared.

I wish I could say the same, I wanted to hit the roof during my internals...they hurt a lot... After the epidural, it was like a breeze!

Re: internal exam pain?
For me, when they would check to see if I was dialated, it did hurt. Some dr's were more gentle than others, but there were days that I almost jumped clear through the ceiling.

sorry guys...it's a necessary evil. I didn't want to lie and say they weren't that bad. Some people don't think that they are... I am so sorry if I scared you...

Re: internal exam pain?
Mine weren't very painful because i think - i hadn't dialated and effaced but one doctor was rough and made me see stars. It really depends on the gentleness of your doctor - basically they try to reach "inside" of you to see if your cervix is thinning out....so its not the most comfortable but its over in a few seconds so its not that bad...

Re: internal exam pain?
I heard on a past post here that they are not medically necessary in most cases & therefore optional. Is this true?

Re: internal exam pain?
I actually had my first internal today and I was very nervous. It was actually not bad at all. Their is a little pressure but I think it is more comfortable then having a regular pelvic exam when your not pregnant.

Thanks so much for saying this. I have my first internal this week and I too have been very nervous about it.

Re: internal exam pain?
at the exams, I didn't think they were that bad, but at the hospital, they were trying to get things moving - and those weren't as nice, but with the contractions it really all blurs.

Re: internal exam pain?
Besides some pressure I never found my internals to be painful at all... It could be every woman is different and also I believe its the doctor and how gentle they are or arent?
