Re: International Calling Cards and cell phones
When we went to Aruba last time we bought a new phone chip for 20 bucks and $10 calling card down there..gave us 4 hours of talking time verses a call out of the hotel for like $30 for 5 minutes (Holy run-on sentance )
BTW: we bought the chip at the airport ( seems like lots of ppl do it) and the calling cards can be purchased everywhere. I guess the Cayman Islands wouldn't be too different.

I heard something about unlocking the phone. is that necessary?? And what kind of chip did you get??
DH needs the phone to keep in contact with his employees so it's pretty important that he have it

Re: International Calling Cards and cell phones
depending on where you're going and your phone you can either:
set up your plan with ATT to have an international plan for the month (it's fairly reasonable)
OR buy the sim card in the country you're going and use that.... a lot of countries you buy credit (i.e. a 10 Euro card) and you just use it til it runs out. the great thing is that if people call you, it usually doesn't cost you credit.
I do the SIM card thing all the time when I go to Ireland. However, we go often enough that my family actually bought a cheap phone and just add credit to it when any of us goes over.

Re: International Calling Cards and cell phones
Thats right, forgot to mention I have an international phone (Sony Ericsson & Razor)because I also use it every summer in Croatia. Just switch out the Sim card when you lift the battery, but you can call your carrier to "unlock" your phone. Should be free. You'll have a temporary new number. Its really easy- not as complicated as you may think.

Re: International Calling Cards and cell phones
I spoke w/ AT&T today. Their $5.99 calling plan drops the cost per minute .30. The agent told me that if I get a different SIM that calling out would be no issue but people calling us would have to call us international (more money for them). If we kept our number and got the calling plan and people left us voice mail it would cost us money since the call has to go to Cayman then be rerouted back to the US. Grr I wish DH could just leave the phone home!!
