international text/call/video chat app
does anyone have a good app you can do the above...for free?? I am traveling internationally next week and would like to stay in touch with my kids as much as possible

Whatsapp and Viber are good for text and recorded messages but not two way video chat ie you can make a video and send it to them but not have a video chat with them.

Whatsapp for texting. It's totally free when you're on WiFi.
Facetime for video chat.
Make sure you call your carrier and add on an international data and voice plan before you leave.

I'm guessing you want to do this on Wifi. I use What's App for texting and FB messenger for phone calls. Skype for video chat, but I don't do that much.
If you want to do this without Wifi and use normal 3G or LTE, then you should check with your provider.
You can also see if you have an unlocked phone and just pick up a pay-as-you-go SIM card.
