Interview ? Should you mention about having to leave to pick up kids from school if they are sick?
This ? is for my friend. She has an interview for an office position in a car dealership. She lives OOS and has 8 yr old twins. Her DH lives 4 hrs. away and just comes home on the weekends. Other than 1 or 2 friends, there is no one else to help her. Should she tell the interviewer that she will have to leave to pick up her child at school if they should get sick. I said that she should mention it, she said that she thinks she should not say too much. I'm sure that a boss will understand if it doesn't happen too often.

I wouldn't mention it personally in an interview. To be honest, as far as I know, it's illegal for an employer to mention if a potential employee has family during an interview. So why should she bring it up? Disclosing that info could make it sound like she is going to often need to do this, even if that's not the case.

Thank you for this info. Great point. I relay it to her.

IMO, Absolutely DO NOT mention that in an interview. It's like asking about vacation time or raises, it's just bad form. Wait until she gets the job, and then bring it up with the new boss.

NEVER say in an interview or to you employer than you are a potential employee who will leave early, will be out when the kids are sick, etc.... How would anyone hire her if she said anything like that? The employer would automatically think she will never be in the office.

EVERYONE has to leave work unexpectedly for various reasons. Should she also tell them at the interview that if she gets violently ill with the flu, she is calling in sick? If she gets into a car accident, and is in the hospital, she won't be in the next day? As long as it isn't abused, it's things that employers have to deal with. I wouldn't mention it at the interview.

This is 100 percent correct, I learned first hand- it is illegal for a potential employer to be asking about family plans in a job interview. All of the other posters have made excellent points but having delt with this before (I had a potential employer ask me 3 or 4 times what my plans were to have a family) I think an alarm might go off in my head if the employer were to even begin going in that direction. They know what they can and cannot ask...it says something about an employer who tests the waters with illegal questions. I hope that doesn't happen though!
