Intolerant of breast milk

Is it possible for my baby to not be tolerating my breast milk? I have cut almost everything out of my diet already -- dairy, tomatoes, garlic, onions, lettuce, and most veggies. My DD still has days (like today) where she is just screaming in pain trying to pass gas. It is very difficult to get her to burp, and lately when she does, there is more and more spit up with it. I'm just not sure if switching her to a formula will make things worse for her little belly or if it is possible that she can't digest my milk, and maybe formula will help her.

Any opinions or suggestions?

Re: Intolerant of breast milk

My sister has gone through the same thing with her daughter, and has cut out so much dairy and other high-allergens. It did get better as the baby got a little bit older, although it was really bad no matter what she tried in the beginning.

Have you looked it up on the kelly mom website? I think it is kellymom.com.

Talking to the doctor is always best, but I just wanted to make sure you know that all babies have lots of gas, and that it is common for babies who didn't spit up in the beginning to start spitting up after a few weeks -- without anything being wrong.

Breastmilk is nearly always the easiest to digest, especially if you are willing to do an elimination diet.

Re: Intolerant of breast milk

it's possible....I tried BF for a short pd of time and then started supplementing with formula. She was in so much pain and so gassy, that we tried soy formula nad noticed a difference. I was still pumping and giving her 1 or 2 bottles of BM a day and at my 6 week pp, they started me on the pill, so no more pumping. After I stopped the BM, I noticed a difference in her again.

Re: Intolerant of breast milk

It's possible, though infrequent, that a baby digests formula better than BM. I'll tell you, Alex had the worst gas on the planet and I tried virtually everything, and nothing worked. Eventually, she grew out of it around 4 months. Like someone said, most babies are born having bad gas (though it doesn't manifest usually until about 3 weeks). This is mostly because their digestive systems are so immature and they need some time to grow into themselves and adapt to new substances. It usually takes about 3 months for their little bodies to mature to a level where it isn't as painful to pass gas or digest formula/BM... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
