Introducing Milk... help!!

How did you introduce milk at the one year mark? I want to try to get them to drink milk from a sippy not a bottle; has anyone had success with this?

What sippy is the best for milk?

Do you just give the same number of ounces of milk that you've been giving in formula?

TIA!!Chat Icon

Re: Introducing Milk... help!!

i gave 8oz's of milk 3 times a day..get the large sippy cups..no drip (gerber has some) In the beginning start with more formula then milk and gradually add more milk until it's all milk. I still gave them bottles at a year and then i gradually took away the morning and replaced with a sippy cup and then the afternoon...My girls are 17 months now and they still get a bottle before bed..When they turn 2 i am going to get rid of that one.

Re: Introducing Milk... help!!

Since DS is going to be 1 next week and I finished his formula that I had at home, I decided to start giving him milk. I just put it in the bottle and he took to it right away.

So you're just going w/ the bottle for now? When do you think you'll transition to just milk in a sippy?

I have been trying giving DS the sippy cup since he was 9 months old. He knows how to hold it but does not know how to lift it to suck from it so I have been staying with the bottle. I just started him on milk on Sat so I figured I would get him used to the milk first for a couple of weeks and then try switching to the sippy cup. I did not want to change everything on him at once.

Re: Introducing Milk... help!!

when my dss turned one I would give them milk about 3x a day 8oz at a time. My doc said that they should have about 24oz a day of milk. My first son took any sippy cup I gave him however my 2nd in the beginning would only take the sippi cup w/ the platex top (i think it started w/ a "N") I know target and stop n shop sells them. Good Luck!

This is what I did with DD. To her, it looked the same so she drank it. She made a face at first (a "whoa, this is different" face) and from there she developed a (so far) love for milk. At 6, I have a hard time getting her to drink anything else!

She liked it in the cups as well...but preferred her milk in a bottle. So I gave her water (she refused juice) in cups and milk in bottles.

We switched to milk first and then got rid of the sippy cups at I think 18 months.

I just mixed formula and milk over I think 2 days and they were fine with the transition.

For the sippy's I tried it gradually and it didn't work, so I just took the sippy cups away and by the end of the weekend they were on sippy cups.

Re: Introducing Milk... help!!

Thank you all for your advice and sharing your experiences. My guys love their sippy (the transitional Avent one) but I tried a different one b/c it's bigger and they both looked at me, utterly repulsed. I might just use the transitional spout on a larger sippy and see how that goes.

I just bought my first 1/2 gallon of whole milk, so wish me luck!!Chat Icon Chat Icon
