introducing peanut butter younger?
My son is going to be 2 in 2 weeks, and I just gave him peanut butter this week. But I heard on the news that they are saying to not hold off anymore, and to give it younger because holding off is what is causing the allergy.
Has anyone talked to their ped about it? I don't go until June, and I was just curious.

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
what
you want me to SHARE my peanut butter? NEVER!
I heard that too... haven't spoken to my ped, becuase DS is still only 7 mo old...
I WILL say, though, that DS HAS already licked a hazelnut gelato... and oh how he loved it

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
I dont know, DD is 10 months, i just now, literally 2 hours ago, gave her a PB& J sandwich.
She is fine.
A lot of this allergy stuff is overkill.

My brother's friend is a ped and she agrees that you don't need to hold off. I think I may need to try a little with DD this weekend.

# 1 had PB when he was 18 months. #2 had it at about 8 months because #1 decided to "share"
#3 had it at about 15 months.
We have no food allergies in either family.

DS had it at 15 months b/c he wanted some of a sandwich that DH was eating.
He just now likes it, but just peanut butter, no jelly

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
Just an FYI, there are no known food allergies in our family. I gave DD peanut butter at 2, and she is allergic.
I had no idea and no warning. We are now very careful with her diet and carry an Epi-pen because it is life threatening.

Buuuuut chances are that if you gave it at 3 (which was the recommended age) that she would still be allergic, in a way, I think finding out sooner is better if there is an allergy, no?

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
I would wait. My DS has other allergies and when he was tested at 18 months it showed he wasn't allergic to peanuts. I still waited until he was around 2 1/2 to give it. He ate it a few times no problem, but then he had a reaction after a few times. I just had him retested and he now is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. They make soy nut butter and sunflower butter you can use instead. The soy nut butter is not bad. The sunflower is okay, but I don't like the consistency of it.

My allergist says by giving them nuts early on you can sensitize them to it making them more likely to develop an allergy.

I understand what you are saying. I am just saying, at whatever age you give DC peanut butter, just watch very closely for a reaction- because an allergy to peanut can be anaphylactic.
It happens quickly. Always have Benadryl in the house and ask your Doctor the correct dose for your childs weight.

You know they all say something different! It's crazy!! My ped (who is very old school) says the opposite

We gave it to DD at 1 after the ped said it was ok. She doesn't like it that much. There is no history of food allergies in either family.

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
I also heard that AAP changed their peanut butter recommendation. I gave DD her first taste between 15 & 16 months. She loves it when DH is eating it, and is so-so with it when her daddy isn't around.

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
ds had peanut butter at 12 months not because I wanted him to but because he decided to have a whole handful of peanut butter m&m's my sister shared with him. Needless to say I sat next to him with benadryl for an hour. He's been fine since and has pb&j atleast once a week

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
DS is 16 months, he has had PB but not often, my ped said to stay away more for chocking hazard, and I could see my DS had some issues with it being so sticky!

#3 had it at about 15 months.
We have no food allergies in either family.
We had a roughly similar "schedule" for our two DC as your first 2.... Luckily, neither one has any issues.

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
i asked the doc at DDs 15 month appt. and he asked that we wait until earliest 18months but he would prefer 2 years...so we are waiting. This doctor has been our family doc. since before I was born, my parents still go to him so im doing what he says since we are still thriving under his guidance...all in what you feel comfortable doing though

personally I take everything I hear with a grain of salt.
My gut is to start it young. My DS will try some Peanut Butter before age 1. JMO.

There are no known peanut allergies in either family. I will be introducing peanut butter earlier. I agree with the new studies that say holding off on the peanuts leads to more allergies.

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
I'm holding off for the choking reason as well.
I did read that nuts of any kind can be absorbed through stomach lining at a young age and that can leead to the allergy.

Re: introducing peanut butter younger?
I was just given the okay to give peanut butter, but not actual nuts until 3 (choking hazard). Peanut butter is very thick and kids are prone to getting it caught in their throat, so if you are giving it to infants, I would be careful.
