Invisible fence
Does anyone have one? I have read some comments made here a couple of years ago about a shock the dog would get and how many of you said you wouldn't do it. That's not what I'm asking. I wonder who does have one, about how much it costs, and is it effective for your dog? I have a 10 lb Maltese and at my present house I open the back door and he just runs back and forth a few times and then comes back in. In a couple of weeks we are moving to a house with really large property on all sides but it is totally open. There is no way I can put a fence around all of this. It bothers me that he won't be able to run and get his exercise even though the yard is three times the size. I would be out there with him so I am not concerned about another animal coming over, or a person, for that matter. I just want him to be able to get the exercise he is used to and enjoys without the risk of him running out of the yard. Please share your personal experiences with me. thank you.

Re: Invisible fence
my friend has one of these - her system is adjustable, so you could put it on a low setting since you have a small dog. I don't know about cost, but it works well for her.
The dog wears a little collar that reacts to the fence. Other animals, children, etc. can cross without any shock.
They usually come with extra collars also, incase you have a friend over with a dog. However, you may need to adjust the setting if it is a bigger dog and walk the dog around the perimeter so it knows where the shock is.

Re: Invisible fence
Would you be able to find out the brand for me or where your friend got the system from? I would rather get something recommended. Thank you very much.

Re: Invisible fence
We had one for my dog when I was a kid. It was great for our dog. Fencing was not an option for us. When they installed it, they put up flags to train the dog about where the line was. The dog hears a sound when they approach the invisible fence line/flags. If they try to cross the line, they do get a shock. It is not a big shock- my dad actually held the collar in his hand and got close to the line when we first got it! My dog got shocked one time, the first day we got it. We had her for 12 years and she never got another shock. IMO it was a good thing for us, she could go out an play all she wanted and she was safe.

Re: Invisible fence
I don't have one, but I've heard stories about dogs either getting frightened, or overly excited and running past the edge of the "fence" because they weren't thinking, and focusing on something else. Then, they couldn't get back in the yard because the fence keeps them out just as much as it keeps them in. I guess it totally depends on the dog, but just something to think about if your dog is prone to running at full tilt without thinking.

Re: Invisible fence
We had one for our family dog. He probably only got shocked two or three times. They learn pretty quickly! They hear a tone a few feet before they hit the shock so they associate the tone with shock. The only negative we saw is that the dog freaks out if there is a similar tone that goes off in the house!
