IOC removes 2 sporting events from Olympics - Softball and baseball
Baseball and softball will be removed from Olympic competition following the Beijing Games, the first sports to be thrown out of the Olympics since polo in 1936. Fourth-Place Medal readers are clamoring to know what these sports ever did to the IOC in order to get unceremoniously dumped from the world's biggest sporting event?
Unlike the previous cases taken on by our top-notch Investigative Unit, the questions about the removal of baseball and softball have no definitive answer. The dumping of the sports was done by a secret ballot and the IOC felt no need to justify its actions afterwards. But, we have come up with the four most likely reasons, which we'll rank in order of importance.
source ---------------------------------------------- this really has me
they probably removed these 2 b/c America is very dominant... yet they keep "sporting events" like synchronized diving and synchronized swimming are those really a sport?

Yeah, I found it odd that they booted softball and baseball.
I do agree that the IOC was somewhat sticking it to team USA b/c we are so dominant.
Plus I do see the connection to Bush. Think about it, he used to OWN the Texans, it was like his baby. He's supposedly a HUGE baseball fan (obviously, he bought a team!!) so yeah, I could se the IOC kind of wanting to stick it to him.
Crazy.

Re: IOC removes 2 sporting events from Olympics - Softball and baseball
I heard this on the radio this morning and I don't understand why they'd do that.
But, I'd rather watch synchronized diving and swimming...that's something we don't often get to see...baseball and softball we can watch anytime...I don't know...that's JMO...

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!! don't read if you don't want to find out what happens tonight!
this decision combined with the Chinese gymnast getting the gold for the uneven bars over Nastia Liukin when they had the SAME score really has me believing that the IOC has a vendetta against the US.

Oh I believe it. Especially since MP sweapt the swimming medals, we're gonna take it in basketball, beach volleyball and I'm pretty confident we'll take the gold in beach too.
They had to do something to even the score.
Personally, I enjoy watching gymnastics and figure skating during the olympics but I think they're so corrupt. So is boxing.

Re: IOC removes 2 sporting events from Olympics - Softball and baseball
I think its a shame but I think the decision is more done because of lack of interest. How many actually watch Olympic baseball or softball? My DH who is a huge baseball fans was all upset when he heard about the IOC's decision and then I asked him "do you watch Olympic baseball?" and his answer was "no."

I'm sure just as many who watch table tennis, or water polo, or badminton.
IMO, they singled out the 2 sports that the US is dominant in. if China was dominant in baseball, it would not have been removed

Re: IOC removes 2 sporting events from Olympics - Softball and baseball
I think the bigger problem is that other countries don't play those sports. Baseball is not big in Europe, so that limits the number of countries who can even contend for the medal. But, I don't support the removal of baseball/softball!
But, did anyone notice that badmiton got more coverage then tennis did? And how is shooting an Olympic sport?

Oooh hey, if they do, I might actually stand a chance of becoming an olympic athlete.
Either that or if they make being a Michael Phelps fan a sport, I've got the gold in the bag!!!

FTR these two sports were voted out by the IOC in 2005 regarding the 2012 Olympiad.
Also the US has not dominated in baseball, Cuba has. Since becoming an Olympic event in 1992 the US has won the bronze in 1996 and the gold in 2000. No medals in 1992 or 2004. Cuba won the gold in 1992, 1996 and 2004.
the article didn't say 2005, so I didn't know that.
I also didn't know that about US baseball... I read what it said about the Softball team and assumed it was true for baseball too. thanks for clarifying.

Actually, that decision is was based on a pre-determined tie-breaker that was built in to the scoring system that they re-vamped after the 2004 Olympics. Its a weird method, and I'm not sure if it's fair, but there is no way it could be a vendetta against the US.
Baseball/softball just aren't international enough sports. I know a lot of the other stuff seems weird to us, (ping pong, field hockey, handball) but it is big in other countries, so there is decent competition/interest from several different countries. Also, baseball is looooooooong. That's a lot of time to waste with all those tournament games, if no one is really interested.

I wouldn't go this far. We are good in softball.
But in baseball, the US is definitely not the most dominant team.
First off it's not like basketball where we are sending in our "pros". The US Baseball team is filled with a bunch of rookies and journeymen players.
Plus when we did play "our pros" in the last major international event (World Baseball Classic)... the US didn't even win it! They didn't even make 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place.
So the US is definitely FAR from dominant in Baseball.

Because nobody that's into Tennis really cares about the Olympics. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Tennis eventually goes away.
Tennis is all about the four majors (like Wimbledon).
Ask any tennis player what they would rather win. An Olympic gold medal? Or Wimbledon?
