I think its a shame but I think the decision is more done because of lack of interest. How many actually watch Olympic baseball or softball? My DH who is a huge baseball fans was all upset when he heard about the IOC's decision and then I asked him "do you watch Olympic baseball?" and his answer was "no." I'm sure just as many who watch table tennis, or water polo, or badminton.
IMO, they singled out the 2 sports that the US is dominant in. if China was dominant in baseball, it would not have been removed
The U.S is dominant in basketball, and that is not being removed. I should have clarified my statement earlier - not only is there no public interest, but it is not played very much internationally. The US and Latin american countries are big on baseball, and now a bit in Japan, but its not really played all over the world.

I dont think there is a secret conspiracy against the US, as another poster stated these sports are not as popular in other countries and there are not a lot of countries represented in the competition...
