Irresponsible coworker?

Okay ladies and gents, I need your opinion to make sure I am not the one who is a stick in the mud.

As you all know I am an adult ESL teacher in a year round program. This past summer, one of our teachers decided to do what she did last year and take the summer off to spend time with her three school aged children (this is NOT the irresponsible part). As a result, I did double duty this summer (but got double money)

At the end of August we took a vacation from class and we started back yesterday (gave our students a chance to get their children back in school and situated).

The teacher who took the summer off, though, called us and let us know that her DH planned a trip for the whole family to go to Dsney for 10 days Chat Icon and she would be missing the first two weeks of class.

Am I weird to think that this is irresponsible? She took off ALL summer with her kids. Her DH was off too because he was laid off for the summer and only worked side jobs. Now classes have resumed and she is going away??? And taking the kids out of school????

Tell me I am not the only one who finds this odd.

Re: Irresponsible coworker?

as the daughter of 2 teachers- my parents never took off during the school year - we only went on vacation during the peak weeks or in the summer

I do find it odd- and I would never pull my kids out of school- esp. during the first 2 weeks- I am always shocked when people do it- but I find it odd that a teacher would do it

I find it irresponsible. I know for Disney this may be the best time of year to go simply because kids are back in school and I think air fare is pretty reasonable right now. She knew school was starting though. Maybe they should have taken a different vacation when everyone was home and had no responsibilities over the summer. Does she even have vacation time left?
Im thinking maybe (small chance) she's job hunting?

We're paid per diem (weird, I know) so her decision to stay home over the summer was an unpaid one. No vacation time to worry about. She doesn't work for two weeks, she doesn't get paid, I doChat Icon

As far as job hunting, she has it made in the job with us. It is very flexible. She doesn't want a regular structured job.

Re: Irresponsible coworker?

Personally it is none of my business and I wouldn't care.

I guess if she isn't getting paid for it, she doesn't care. At least you are making extra money b/c of it. I would actually be happy.
