Is a mini-van a "must have" for a long car ride?
We are going to Virginia in August w/ my then almost 5y DS and 19month DD...We are going to rent a vehicle (well at least we "think") for the trip....
Mini-vans are !!!!!
Could we get away with an SUV you think ???
Also, do mini-vans come with the DVD players when you rent them ?
Thanks !!

I do loooove my minivan, but I don't think its a must have with just two kids. Unless you are planning to bring a ton of gear.

Not a must have. What about renting a 7-passenger CUV (crossover)? Like a Maxda CX-9 or Buick Enclave or GMC Acadia?
And most rentals will not have DVD players!

If you can get the mini van for the same price, then great. Otherwise you'll be fine with an SUV. I wouldn't suggest renting a DVD player. I think you're better off getting one cheap. I bought ours for the car from Target. It comes with two screens and it's great. You can move it from car to car. And the're only like $130.

We rented one for a drive to SC last year and it was the best decision EVER.

In my world...the DVD player is the must have...I don't really care if it's a car, a van or an SUV..

For 2 kids a minvan is not a must have. We have a Hyundai sante Fe and it's just fine.
BUT- a DVD player is. We picked up a relatively inexpensive portable model with 2 TVs at Target. It has a remote control. BEST investment EVER.

We're about to try our first trip up to NY in our Highlander on Wednesday. We only have 1 so far, but we'll have 2 pretty soon. ITA that a portable DVD player is a must. Even at 15 months, we knew that we'd need one--DD isn't a huge fan of regular tv, but she LOVES her Your Baby Can Read DVDs and she asks for them multiple times a day. I know that will be our saving grace!
But I'll let you know how we do space-wise

Maybe thats what we'll do then....
We have a portable DVD player, but it's a handheld (??)...I wonder if they sell adapters or something that would attach it to a seat
Otherwise maybe we will just splurge for the others..
Thanks all

I don't think it's a must. We have an SUV and regularly drive 7 hrs to Pittsburgh and it's fine. We just bought a portable DVD player to set up for DS!

Re: Is a mini-van a "must have" for a long car ride?
We have an almost 2 year old and 6 month old and we find the mini-van useful (despite the lack of coolness in driving one). we'll put the kids in the middle, my wife will sit in the last row so she can deal with them while I drive.
