Is a trainer too late? UPDATE again 1 year later!

I just had a baby two weeks ago and my two rotty's are not a fan at all. I tried to prepare them for the last 9 months and I guess I just didn't do enough. They have never been around babies before so I know this is all new to them. They flip out when they hear her cry even though I had played a cd of crying noises, I guess it's different when the real thing is here. Right now I am keeping them seperated, either they are up stairs when I am downstairs or seperated by gates all over my house. It's exhausting trying to keep them seperated but I am also trying to let them get used to the different noises so maybe they will calm down some. I also feel that when the two are not together they deal with the noise better then when they are together, it seems they get eachother going almost.
Getting rid of them is NOT an option, I got them 6 and 7 years ago and I will not ship them off because I didn't prepare them properly, this is my fault so I will do whatever it takes to get them to at least not react to her anymore. Obviously, they will never ever be left alone with her in a room but I would love to co exist peacefully where they can be in the same room as her and not bother her if she is in her swing or bassinet.
Got off tangent a little here..basically my question is do you think it's too late for a trainer at their age and can anyone reccomend one? Thanks!!

Updated

Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks was wrong. With a lot of patience and training on our part through research and great suggestions here my dd and my rotties are best buds! Never thought it would happen but I refused to give up on my babies!

It's not too late, dogs are much smarter than we think. They also need time to adjust.

The trainer we used (although not for the same issue) always told us it's never too late to train a dog. She works with dogs of all ages and types. She's a little pricey but guarantees her work for lifetime. (if needed)
Let me know if you want her info. She's amazing!

Rotties are SUCH smart dogs, I really think they could very well be trained to be well behaved around the baby Chat Icon

It's never too late. There is no such thing as you can't teach a dog new tricks. They are always learning and growing. Give the trainer a try. Good Luck.

Re: Is a trainer too late?

Not too late. Dont worry!!! They are adjusting to the changes, just as human children do when a sibling is born.

My 2 dogs were here for years before DD came along. They were never arond kids either and frankly, they dont do well with kids at ALL.

My male used to cry alot and bark when the baby would cry. He would sit by the bassinett and go insane.

Took some time but I kept allowing them in, including them, paying attention to them and it gradually worked out. TRUST me, its all about them adjusting and changing and getting used to the changes.

Also...with each new thing my DD learned to do, my male had to adjust. When she started sitting up, he reacted the same, then got used to it. Then crawling...then talking, crusing, walking, etc. Took him some time with each new milestone to realize and accept the changes. But it worked b/c we would NEVER give our dogs away and we are smart enough to know animals need to adjust just as humans do.

My DD is now 3 and although some times were rough (we did have to keep my male seperated at times since he bites when he is nervous) things are just great. My DD was taught how to treat them, when to leave them alone, and when she can be all over them. We taught them too, had a trainer, etc but they are very stubborn. But they love her, and its as if we were all always together. I no longer remember the days when it was just us and the dogs, and I dont think the dogs remember those days either.

They love their new family member and she loves them too.

Hang in there, I PROMISE you. You have to give the dogs time to adjust but please DONT brush them aside or even think about getting rid of them b/c the going gets tough. And yes, it WILL be tough at times (having a baby is very tiring, then add working on things with the dogs and its exhausting).

I promise you one day this will be old news....Chat Icon

Thanks Ladies, I am going to give it another week on our own to get adjusted and if they still seem upset then I am going to go ahead and get a trainer. I don't have any intentions of getting rid of them, they are stuck with me until the end!

Please trust from someone who has been there big time, it does work out. Dogs need a lot of patience and time to get adjusted to this new little person in the house. But as our vet told us, dogs are pack animals and will grow to love and accept their new pack member, if given time and love and patience and NOT be brushed or pushed aside.

Re: Is a trainer too late?

Hi Ladies, just wanted to give a quick update. With a lot of persistance, praising, crying and ready to scream my dogs have finally come around...well mostly. Max, my male learned quickly that being a good boy near the baby would get him awarded with a treat. My female,Tonka, well she is coming around but still has her moments. I let them lick her feet and sometimes they sneak a lick to the face but I will take that over the incessant barking in her face anyday! I will never, ever, ever leave them alone, not even for a second but it's nice that we are able to co-habitate with eachother again. We'll keep at it and hope that one day my female will love her as much as she loves us! Thanks for all of the advice!!Chat Icon
