I'm ready to rip my hair out! It's a battle everyday. I've tried everything...rewards, having her pick between 2-3 outfits. Nothing works. All she wants to wear is old tshirts (which I just packed away) and sweat pants. I'm sorry but I'm not taking my child to a party or church wearing that. Ugghghhhhh...What am I going to do when she's a teenager. It's so frustrating!

This is what I do with Ale - and it's now one of the few areas we don't have battles ...

I bought a cute little rug at Ikea, heart shaped. She loves it. It is her "dressing mat". I get out her clothes (SOMEtimes I will let her choose between 2 things, or pick her shoes, or decide if she wants jeans or leggings -- always let her have SOME input). Then she gets on her dressing mat - I usually have the TV on for her too - and I dress her and fix her hair. She is very excited about her dressing mat. She loves it.

IF she gives me a hard time, I threaten once to turn off the tv, and the second time it goes off, that's it.

HTH!

It was a pelasure to meet you yesterday and Maddie is adorable!

Thanks, Kara! Great idea. Nice to meet you guys, too. Alexandra is adorable. I love how she said she's not shy! So cute :)

Re: Is anybody else's 3 year old dd so extremely difficult especially when it comes to getting dressed???

Lily can be very difficult when getting dressed....so this is what I do.

She gets to pick out her outfit. She only wants to wear dresses these days, so it'll be a dress with some tights.
When it's time to get dressed, I let her know beforehand that if she doesn't listen and get dressed nicely, I'll put away the outfit she picked out, and than I get to choose her outfit. Sometimes, I'll let her know that that means she'll be wearing pants that day.

So far, so good.

DD was getting very difficult to dress.
its a bit better now, I let her pick between 2 outfits no more then that.
she also loves to dress herself so i let her do that as best she can and guide her along since we dont have all the time in the world.
seems to be working so far.

It's becoming a PITA bc she always wants to pick out her clothes. I taught her how to match things so it's not that bad. Sometimes I hide the things I don't want her to wear. I have found that when I really push an outfit she refuses it, so I try not to steer her that hard.

Depends on the day, but yes, we do have a hard time with this.

I love Kara's idea - I think that's great.

I do let him pick out his clothes. That has been helping. He gets two choices and that's it.

I also distract him with the TV

Re: Is anybody else's 3 year old dd so extremely difficult especially when it comes to getting dressed???

I have a 3 y/o boy and he fights me...he wouldnt even wear his halloween costume depite me 1st trying to not make a big deal of it, then bribing sessions, and everything else to try to make him wear it...regular clothes are also a big issue...you are not alone!! What sucks is the amount of money I will probably waste from clothes that will just sit in his drawer and grow out of b/c he refuses to wear them Chat Icon

eta: teaching him what matches has helped a little bit

AJ was beginning to give me a hard time. Now I leave 2 outfits out each night for him to "think about" and to pick from in the AM. So far, so good.

Noahs horrible. I have a PILE of stuff to return b/c he REFUSES to wear it. We tried 900 coats before he found one he liked. HE only wants shirts with superhereos or graphics on them and they cant be too long, too warm, too big etc etc Everyday is a battle.

Re: Is anybody else's 3 year old dd so extremely difficult especially when it comes to getting dressed???

DS is 2 1/2 and getting dressed is the only thing he really gives me a hard time about. I call him "my little Alex P. Keaton" because he wants to wear kakhi pants with a belt everyday! I've tried to let him have input, pick from two choices, etc. but it is always a crap shoot. I love the "dressing mat" idea. I think I will try something like that.

I'm curious what other suggestions everyone has....
