Do you think i should bother with that program..i figured to i would be able to gain experience since i would be working under an RN

I was a nurse extender at St. Francis hospital. The pay was around $15/16 an hour, if I remember correctly. It was VERY hard work, but I think its definitely great experience if you want to go on to be an RN.

the nurse extenders at St. Francis were a godsend for my brother.
That is one component of the hospital I found put my mind at ease the most. There was someone with him when I couldn't be.

i did exactly that. first a nurse assistant then a nurse.. like the PP said they pay anywhere from 14 to 18 an hour. the higher salaries are in the nursing homes. It was the hardest work by far in my medical career but it gave me a good idea about nursing. go for it!

It's definitely hard (and dirty) work, but if you want to be an RN, it will be such a great experience for you! My classmates that were PCA's got to see so much at work because the nurses would pull them in to show them stuff that they came across.
Pay depends on the place. I did a rotation at a nursing home in east islip and the NAs there said they made about $14.50/hr, but the PCAs at North shore and Winthrop make between $16-$17/hr depending on the shift (nights usually make a little more). Many hospitals also have tuition reimbursement, so by the time you're thinking of going to nursing school, they may pay for it.
Most programs to become a NA are 3 months (that's about the standard time frame), but not all hospitals offer it.
I've noticed that you've asked alot of questions about nursing. Honestly, i think that you should just dive in and give it a shot, rather than regret just thinking about it and not trying it. What's the worst that can happen? you give it a chance, hate it, and move on. Good luck with your decision.

I agree: the pay rate is between 14- 18. I work in psychiatric and the Na's( Pa's) there make in the higher range.
I am a nurse and started out as a nursing assistant. It gives you a lot of experience while going through nursing school. I was seing hands on what we were learning in class.
Plus.. you can work somewhere that gives you tuition reimbursement which will pay for your nursing school... should you decide to stick with nursing.
good luck :)
