ITA! This is why we bought our nursery dressers off of craigslist. They are mod looking. I got two all wood, dovetailed dressers for $40. A coat of paint and I now have a dresser for my sons plus one we put in our room.
If I were you I would check CL(probably lots of nice stuff in your neck of the woods) and even if you need to have anything, stained, painted or restored you will have solid pieces

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
this topic is near and dear to my heart- honestly, people just don't want to pay for good, quality merchandise.. when people go to my dad's store, they don't want to hear that a solid maple or cherry table is 1500 dollars.... they don't want to buy an entertainment center that's over 2k...
people don't buy furniture for life like they used to- thanks to bob's and other cheap furniture outlets you can buy furniture "for now"- it's not an investment people make- just something to hold them over until the next piece is bought

AMEN.
This is what we get for fostering a disposable society. I don't blame the stores as much as the consumers that invest in them and plan to throw away the items in a few years. If we didn't buy this stuff, they would be out of business. The economy right now doesn't help either. I know it's tempting, I've done it too. But this is why solid wood products are harder to come by.
Closest I found to solid wood was Restoration Hardware. We got the Portman bed and are pretty happy with the quality. Although, a few months after we bought, someone posted an article here that they were changing their production factories overseas or something... Our kitchen table & chairs are solid wood from Sears, although the wood isn't that hard. I forget what the name of it is but it's some kind of asian wood.
I second the Gothic suggestion. We custom made a credenza years ago and I had a friend who was a professional woodworker help me with all the decisions. He said they were on the up and up with all the pricing and materials. We still have the credenza and it hasn't warped, split, faded, scratched at all. That was a great purchase.

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
I don't think they have them by you guys but World Market/Cost Plus has the best furniture around and are extremely affordable. Their stuff is made out of solid rubberwood which is also a sustainable wood. I will post a link since you could have it shipped and they have free shipping on select furniture now. linky

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
yes! i purchased two pieces of furniture from Baker (a very high end furniture manufacturer), and i was quite disappointed in the quality of them in light of Baker's reputation and the price i paid. turns out they were imported (which i could tell as soon as they were delivered).
i do have a piece by hickory white, which is of amazing quality--and made in the good ole usa!

one word: THOMASVILLE.
expensive, but worth every penny.
they usually have sales around this time of year with 36 months no interest financing... that's how I furnished my apt a few years ago...
We bought from Thomasville. Its definitely not the same as it was years ago. However they stand by their product. My friend scratched her table a couple of times and they sent someone to fix it. Free of charge.

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
That's why we had some pieces custom made for us. I was so digusted while we were searching for bedrom furniture. I got some measurements from furniture that we saw online and had the shop make us what we wanted.
We did get some nice wood stuf at Crate and Barrel - -our rustic dining table and the chairs.

Estate sales and auctions upstate. That's where my family buys all our good furniture because you're absolutely right, everything out there now is CRAP! For me, I want certain things in my house to be high quality and solid wood, and I have gotten all that from garage sales, and estate sales and auctions. And believe it or not, a gorgeous solid wood dresser from the curb PERFECT condition!

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
WHAT? Thomasville is not solid wood? I was looking at a dining room set I was going to purchase - even on sale it was over $7000 for just the table chairs and china cabinet. I'm just getting frustrated with them b/c the prices keep fluctuating every week and they can't give you a straight answer as to when the price will be the lowest too shady for me when i am spending that kind of $$$$. That said, what you are saying is making me feel better - is that the case with all of their dining room tables? b/c they said that it was wood!

knock on wood I love my Bernhardt Furniture bedroom set and will probably buy a dining room set by them too.
The furniture is so heavy, I can barely move the nightstand by myself.

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
Room & Board! Everything we buy from there is great quality at a reasonable price. It lasts for a long time. The are especially good for couches and chairs because you can choose the fabrics, finish with any style.
We ahave our BR set and a mahogany solid wood table from Thomasville, and we love it and think it's great quality. But I agree, not everything is good there and the prices can be insane, only shop the 50% sales.

How about Ethan Allen. They have a tent sale every year. Not sure when it is but we got an insane amount of furniture there.

available in stores right now?
we have been searching for furniture for our home and I just can't take these "sort of wood, smashed together, and finished off to look like wood" stuff they have out there for $$$$$$.
they are ALL guilty- even the "TOP stores. b/c of this, the last 3 things we've purchased were antique wood pieces (game table, side board, entry table) and we spent a TOTAL of about $550 on ALL THREE pieces.
and they are SOLID.
we are having the damdest time finding chairs that we like, that are afforable, and that don't look like F-ood.
it's just really frustrating.
Thats why I go to antique stores or places like St. vincent de paul they may be second hand but you cant beat the quality.... I like Peter Andrews too in Farmingdale, you pay clearance for name brand without breaking the bank

I completely agree. I paid a few thousand for my dining room furniture and its falling apart. I got it from "The Place" dont know if that makes a difference but the chairs are falling apart after 4 years, I am used to furniture being for life.

It's terrible! DH and I cannot stand it either, especially when you look at some of our parents stuff. Such good quality furniture that would last you a lifetime.
That's how things go I guess. Look at the cars today compared to the cars that used to be built like tanks. I never thought I would repeat these words unless I was like 80 but...They just don't make things like they used to.

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
It's very difficult to come by real wood furniture that is solid and well made (ie. dove tailing on the draws, real rails for sliding the draws, etc.).
My parents were recently in the market for bedroom and living room furniture. Money was really not an object but they were beyond frustrated with what was out there in furniture stores that were charging TOP dollar.
I found two local furniture stores, basically a mom and pop establishments, one sells "pre-made" furniture (like a regular furniture store) and the other is a custom furniture shop. They went with the first place b/c they were able to find pieces that were built to the standard they were looking for but had they not been so lucky, they were considering the custom place so they knew what they were getting would last.
If you want the info to either the furniture store or custom place, let me know. I'm sure they both deliver in the tri-state area. You may pay a little (or a lot ) more but at least you'll know what you're getting.

Same here. We have a Bernhardt bedroom set and it is excellent quality. I highly recommend them. When we moved into our house, the movers said that they had never moved such heavy furniture!
Also, if you find a high-end brand that you like, contact M. Katz & Sons. They have been on the Lower East Side forever, and they can get high-quality furniture at a much lower price than most of the retail stores.

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
there was an interesting and eye-opening article in smart money in 2006 entitled Pottery Barn Unstuffed . experienced carpenters were hired by the magazine to dissemble and inspect the furniture composition of various pieces from C&B, PB and RH.
all the pieces examined were found to be very poorly made and comprised of cheap materials; - low-grade crate-like lumbar - particle board - paper thin veneers - fiberboard - hollow plastic sofa legs - assembled with glue and nails

Re: Is anyone else completely disgusted by the "quality" of the wood furniture
It is almost impossible to find "solid"wood furniture now a days, but you can get very high quality furniture made from hardwoods solids and hih grade veneers. Most furniture is made this way and it is not a bad thing if it is produced well. Thomasville, Drexel, Ethan Allen PB crate and barrel all these stores are over priced for what they sell, almost nothing from them is solid wood. Stanley is not solid wood but it is made very well and in the USA.

Our bedroom set is also Stanley! I love the quality but hate the style (it's DH's bachelor bedroom set).
We had the same exact problem with finding solid wood when we were looking for our kitchen table. We went to every single store and asked for anything that was solid wood...we finally ended up in a random hole in the wall store on Route 110 (the furniture district) and found a SOLID WOOD table and chairs for MUCH less than crate and barrel stuff

Nostalgia Oak has nice things. My DR table and chairs are RIDICULOUSLY solid and heavy. They are pretty expensive, but you get nice quality for the money.
Though my taste has changed over the years, and while I wouldn't probably pick this set if I was in the market for a set now...you honestly cannot beat the craftsmanship of these pieces.
The table slides open on gears, and has 2 solid wood leaves that store IN the table (once you open it).
The chairs have to way 40 lbs each.
Great set. Go check them out.
I 100% agree with Nostalgia Oak. We've gotten several pieces from them and our chairs are sooo heavy and the table is very very sturdy.
