Is anyone else school doing observations baseodn teh Danielson model?
Its ahwle bunch of diiferent criteria they look at when doing observavtions. My principal is taking one topic each month and looking at that when he comes in. This next one is the way we questions kids. Are we asking open ended questions? Are we having the kids comment on each others opinions. etc etc. Heres my question.. say I am doing a math lesson and there is not really aneed for all that interaction, what happnes then? Do i get a bad observation bc of that. Sorry I think some of this is such bs.

Re: Is anyone else school doing observations baseodn teh Danielson model?
I just got observed on questioning this week. My principal said if she were rating me on the lesson PLAN itself it would not be good. But because I ASKED pivotal and medial questions she would rate me as effective. She also said that in some cases other people (not her) are observing teachers and rating them as developing because their questions are lacking. But they are only getting snapshots and my principal doesn't think it's fair to rate someone on a 15 min snapshot. She would just ignore the "questioning" part of the rubric. We're restart and have many different people in the building on any given day. So what my principal may want to see as an observation write up may not be done by everyone in the building
So I redid my lesson and put anticipatory questions in it. How could we find the inverse? What are the steps we use to solve equations, blah blah. That way I'm covered if anyone sees the observation write up.

Principals were instructed to NOT use the Danielson framework as of right now. However, they are to create their own research based rubric for observations.
Observations are not to be an entire period, but short and frequent....At least 8 per year per teacher

Re: Is anyone else school doing observations baseodn teh Danielson model?
My school is using the Danielson Framework for "snapshot" observations. Each time my AP comes in she is looking for a specific thing. Once was classroom management, accountable talk, another was questioning, etc. We get a rubric and it is broken down into Unsatisfactory, Basic, Proficient and Distinguished with comments.
I had my formal observation a few weeks ago and that one was not based on the framework.

Re: Is anyone else school doing observations baseodn teh Danielson model?
Mine is using it and I think it is ridiculous to use as a snapshot. My school does a snapshot for classroom environment and we all got deceloping in a few areas. I totally disagree with it. I got that I am a developig teacher for my word wall.... Ummm really? I should have faught it, but I just dont have the time or energy. I do plan on questioning my AP about this though because the snapshot was done in October, so is she considering it developing because it is early in the yr? If so, that is unfair because the snapshop is rating ME and I shouldnt be labeled as developing for things not in my control.
My friend got developing bc it was the 3 rd day of the new month and she didnt change her value of the month.

My school has been using Danielson for 2+ years. Our rewrite ups are very detailed. I have never had an issue with it. In fact, I like it because it looks at the whole picture.

But the idea behind Danielson is that observations do NOT contain comprehensive narratives....That is what the DOE is trying to get away from. When I went for training a few weeks ago, my network specifically said that Narratives were OUT!
I can't keep up! LOL

I do not work for the DOE. We only have formal observations - no official drop ins.

THis isn't what we were told. We were told they ARE to use it and they rolled out the rubric in September.

Re: Is anyone else school doing observations baseodn teh Danielson model?
I find it interesting that people in the DOE appear to be against it. At my school the rubric is quite fair and I do not know anyone who has a problem with it.
All districts will soon be using Danielson or something similar because of the APPR requirements.

In Septemeber we were directed to you it for observations. However, by Oct 15th, we were directed to not use it, but to create a research based rubric (Not Danielsons) and conduct frequent observations.
I think that the UFT was challenging Danielson, so that is why we were directed to not use it. Who really knows!

Re: Is anyone else school doing observations baseodn teh Danielson model?
We had a meeting with our UFT district rep a few weeks ago. Here is the nutshell version:
- Danielson cannot be used for formal observations. - Principals need to be trained and certified in using the model first- very few principals are. - Ms Danielson is rumored to be unhappy with how the DOE is using her research. They will use it to fire teachers, not help them improve.
The UFT is lame in many ways- but it seems they are on top of this. Call your district reps if necessary.

This is the same at my school. I think a lot of it has to do with your administration and how THEY use it. If you have an admin that is out to get you then it can really harm you but if you have admins that are using it to help make you a better teacher then it really isn't that big of a deal.

My principal said he is not allowed to use it, but if we want to discuss it in our one-on-one meetings, he will so we can get use to it.

We are doing peer visits based on Danielson. Nothing formal. We do have a partner teacher we have to observe and give feedback to a few times through the year.

Re: Is anyone else school doing observations baseodn teh Danielson model?
Do you have to get a "heads up" about formal evals?
My principal and AP came in to my 5th period class, Monday (unannounced). They stayed for pretty close to the entire period. I had a formal post-ob today. No one told me they were coming. (Not that it matters)
It was a "Satisfactory" lesson. I am not even sure if that is good or not. He had a formal write up in front of him, but I didn't see it.

that really depends on your contract. are you city or LI? also, you really should have a post ob BEFORE they do the formal write up, and obviously you should be seeing and acknowledging the write up

I am in the city and last year I didn't get any evals, so I am not really sure of procedure.

Not sure how it works at your school, but at every school I have ever worked at unannounced observations occurred. At my current school, my dept chair (I think) is the only one who does unannounced, but I figure as long as I am doing my job it doesn't matter when they come in.
