DS has a ton of toys. For some reason he loves little rubber animals, characters (like rubber duckies). Of course he's been chewing on them for months. All of them are made in China. Also his beloved weebles are from China. I'm tempted to take them all away even though none of them were involved in the recall. But he would be heartbroken. Plus it would cost a small fortune to replace them with American made toys (if I could even find them). What are you guys doing? Is taking all the toys away going overboard? Or is it the right thing to do?

Re: Is anyone taking away ALL toys made in China?

Well, DD doesn't have a lot of toys and DS's toys, well they are alllll made in China. He doesn't put things in his mouth though so I'm not going to get rid of them. I did throw away her vinyl books though since she likes to chew on them.

Oh, and I saw today on CNN that diabetic testing strips from China were discovered to be fake and there is question about pregnancy tests, HIV kits, etc. that all come from this same company that manf. the testing strips. What a nightmare!!

I didnt vote. I am so on the fence about this....practically every toy DD has is made in ChinaChat Icon Like you said, to replace them all would cost a small fortune - and shed miss some of her favorites terribly! And so many of them wind up in her mouth bring sucked and chewed on. This is so scary that every other day more toys (and now bibs!) are being recalled. I dont know what the heck to do. Its something Ive been stressing about for a week now.Chat Icon Im interested to hear what other Mommys plan to do and their opinion on this.....

What would he have left? Do they even make toys in the US? It's sick that they did that, but shows that maybe we should stop seeking cheaper labor overseas and think of our own safety. If you think for a second it was accidental, well, you're wrong.

I've been avoiding made in China products for a while now, but pp is right- everything is made in China. So as far as plasctic spoons/plates, etc- stuff I know is going in her mouth- I got rid of that stuff( gerbers stuff is made in the USA)
I've been in th market for new toys, and I've defiunately avioded MIC stuff, but as far as her old stuff... I just got rid of the stuff she chews on.
FWIW< I don't think its overreacting at all. Obviously there are lax giudelines in a few areas- lets not forget the stuff should have been tested before it came inot the US by an American agency. we're talking abut our children here.

Maybe I am a horrible mom but we are still using dr. browns bottles(she has REFUSED all others, I tried) and she is keeping some of her favorite toys, even though they are made in China. She starts day care tomorrow and is going to be upset enough without me taking away her beloved toys or bottles.

Re: Is anyone taking away ALL toys made in China?

I'm getting rid of everything made in China. I had already refrained as much as possible b.c I had read the "Real Toy Story" book a few months ago when it came out and been shocked and horrified.

A friend of mine who owns an old fashioned games store in Huntington
Boardwalk Games and buys American made games offered to let me order through her to save on shipping to get DDs toys.http://www.boardwalkgamesinc.com/madeintheUSA.htm

They are made in Vermont and she said when she goes up there it is literally like Santas Toy Shop. They were even featured on that show Made in AMerica. ANyway, if people want to order from them too, I'm happy to do some sort of group ordering. A lot of their toys I've seen in Monstessori catalogs too.

Here is info on the toy store

Re: Is anyone taking away ALL toys made in China?

You know what the irony of this is for me....I bought Ava these beautiful hand-carved, hand-painted, made in the USA fake pieces of food to use with her play kitchen, and decided that even though it said "lead-free paint" that I would get some plastic food for her so when she chewed on it, it'd be safer. And guess where it's all made? Yup. In China.
I am seriously considering disposing all of her made in China toys and investing the money into American made toys. I'm just so sick to my stomach over all of this.

First of all, love the avatar!

There are two Chinese made toys I'm keeping, her exersaucer and Learning Home (but threw away the little toys that came with it that she could get her mouth on with that) I have to go through the rest of them, but I have a feeling her peek a boo blocks are made in China too (80% of toys are)

I have a really great article I'm going to post which summarizes this China problem. Basically, its the norm there, we just let ourselves become apart of it.

I would love to read it. And not for nothing, I feel like buying American made toys makes sense and is the responsible thing to do as an American. I know they are more money, but I think it's a small price to pay for the safety of my child.
