Re: Is anyone watching Oprah??
I saw what the show was about and I can't even bring myself to watch it.
All I have to say is , are they kidding me?

Re: Is anyone watching Oprah??
I can't even fathom feeling so detached from your child(ren). These women are psychos, PP or not. I had it and NOT once did I feel like inflicting harm on my baby. That's as lame as an excuse as drinking and driving.

OK i am now watching bits and pieces of this and i have to say i do not think these women are "psychos". Although they did actually have a psychotic break, you are using that in a very demeaning way. This can and does happen. I do not think of it as an excuse. IMO you have to be completely out of your mind, completely helpless, completely detached to kill your child. It isn't an excuse...Sometimes i think people who aren't well prepared or well situated FREAK OUT once they have a child and then blame it on PPD. But who am i to say exactly since i am not in the home of these women.
As much as i am horrified about what that woman did who drowned her 5 children i think she was having a psychotic break. She was showing symptoms for a LONG time and tried to get help which fell on DEAF EARS. Her husband knew she was sick and having problems yet CONTINUED to isolate this woman and have more children with her. IMO HE should be on trial and is MORE LIABLE than the mother.
It is truly a sad disease

Re: Is anyone watching Oprah??
What i find interesting is that Brooke Shields is sitting there talking about hearing voices and yet doesn't think she was PSYCHOTIC or had a psychotic break. She will identify with this disease yet imo is still in denial of exactly what happened to her!

Honestly, I'm not here for a debate. I expressed my feelings and I'm not retracting them or fluffing over them. I have no problem labeling a woman who cuts off her 11 month old daughter's arm as psycho, because that's the only way (as a mother) as I can see her. Maybe it's a blanket statement, maybe it's demeaning but that's how I feel. Ill or not, murder is murder. Sorry the "awwh, she was having a mental moment/bad day" doesn't cut it for me when her child is fighting for their life, struggling as they are being drowned, or begging Mommy to stop. How can you look into that child's eyes, hear their voices AND NOT FEEL COMPASSION?? In the case of Andrea Yates, she could have walked those babies into any TX police station and LEFT them, let them know she was a danger to them. Heck, she could have left them home alone and they would have been in a far better predicament. Free will gave her the choice to drown them.
My empathy is saved for the true victims, the children. I wouldn't feel any differently if it was a sex offender, etc.
There was a nut in CA that used his 17 month old daughter as a shield while the cops open fired on him yesterday. Labeling his actions as a psychotic episode isn't going to bring back that little girl or give the mother who now can't hold her daughter in her arms comfort.

Re: Is anyone watching Oprah??
Chill out sharon. I TOO was expressing MY OPINION. AND if you didn't want a debate then WHY THE long speech?
Both mothers and children are victims. In any case of PP then you can say the CHILD was a VICTIM. Maybe they are not DEAD but they are still victims.
You can call it anything you want. If you feel labeling these women as "psychos" because there are victims....Well then ALL WOMEN SUFFERING FROM PP ARE PSYCHOS.
Now that you are done labeling maybe it is best to move on to the preventive stage of this discussion.

Re: Is anyone watching Oprah??
the only think I find disturbing and I have NOT watched the show is that some feel more sympathy for these women then Men who say kill a child they dont know. A women may have PPD, but what about that man? I dont believe in Evil, so he muct have some sort of Mental illness because as a sane person, I dont have the urge to kill.
SO..I get annoyed when I see some KILLERS seen in a different light. I think they ALL should be locked up foever. I think the women should have had a brief moment ( like Brooke shields) where they understood that they were possibly going to harm their children...
If they didnt, I feel from what I know its more then PPD, ior PP psychosis...Its a seperate distinct mental illness to be dealth with.
I myself feel an ounce of sympathy for ANYONE who was ill enough to kill without getting help, but I will sympathize when they are behing bars getting HELPED.
So I have no opinions on this, I dont think theres a debate?? But I Just feel so overwhelmingly sad for ALL involved....Life is so scary..

While I respect your opinions, Red, I really don't feel that you respect others rights to have an opinion as well. Why else would you look to scrutinize and point out my comments specifically?
Ummm, last I checked, I DID admit to having PP, as well as others within my family. I never said PP was psycho, but murdering your children under the guise of PP to me IS psycho.

AND as far as the Andrea Yates issue is concerned.. SHE TRIED TO GET HELP. Many many times. At that point she wasn't in any sane state of mind to make ANY DECISIONS. She tried that ....NOBODY paid attention to her. THAT day she was not LOGICAL, could NOT make life saving decision. the AAWWh factor. ONE could say, based on what you said that we shoudl have NO COMPASSION for ANY mother with PP. AAwww she is freaking out (too bad). Ahhhw she is a little depressed (OH WELL, Get over it and go take care of YOUR CHILD!).

I think that is a load of CRAP. Just because i do not agree withyou labeling these women "psychos" doesn't mean i do not respect your opinion sharon. I didn't scrutinize, just said that i DO NOT think these women are PSYCHOS. I am certainly allowed to say that. Get off your soap box

Re: Is anyone watching Oprah??
This isn't worth my energy because as usual, you don't get it.
EVERY mother has bad days, overwhelming days where they can't cope or they feel stressed. I was having regular crying fits (for unknown reasons) while I had PP. It never entered my mind to act on some insane notion of stoning my child in the head until he/she was dead because I couldn't cope. I hardly consider that glossing over a bad mommy day.

ANd i can say the same for you! I can say how I FEEL about a topic or about a post JUST AS YOU. I was NEVER DISRESPECTFUL or RUDE. I wasn't even scrutinizing what you said. Just didn't agree with ONE WORD.
If you can't handle someone disagreeing with what you said then maybe you shouldn't give an opinion. Sine you can't handle someone having a differing one.
You disagree with how i feel.... OH WELL i do not get my panties all in a bunch.
