Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

I was just curious if this is happening to anyone else -

My dad got pretty sick, and things still need to be done around the house. They kind of expect my DH and my sisters boyfriend to help them out, and they they get mad if it isn't done right away - and exactly how they want it done. Its really frustrating because DH does the work, but we have our own house, and we both work alot - so it isn't done quickly, and there is alot that we don't see that they need help with.

Does anyone else's family expect alot from your DH? what are the boundaries?

my father, grandfather, and uncle passed away all within 6 years of each other, so FH is pretty much the only male that has the ability to fix things, and he does alot of it!

No.

But, I could somewhat relate. My dad is the handyman for both sides of the family. And Friends. My mom gets soo p*i*s*s*e*d sometimes because she feels they take advantage.

Yes my DH does, but he doesn't mind it. He is good at that stuff, so for him, it's fun (in a way) to do.

Re: Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

no not at all...

In fact my DH will just do things for my dad without him asking...

BUT should my dad or mom ever need help. We will both be available to them whenever they want...

They have done soo much for us that whatever they needed would be priority

Re: Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

Yeah right! I wish! I say I wish because that would mean he knows how to fix stuff around OUR house, too! It's ME who's usually on the ladder or under the sink or under the hood of the car. However, it's HIM who's feeding our daughter right now and who just got pooped on, so it's a trade-off that I'm willing to take!

My DH does alot for my mom and grandma....he does it because he loves me and I ask him to help out when they need it. My mom is very appreciative and helps us if we need it so it is a 2 way street

No but more like their IT man. My DH works with computers all day so my family calls him whenever they have a problem with their computer Chat Icon

Re: Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

YES..... my husband did contractor work in a previous life, so he's the guy that everyone calls when they need work done. My father is an electrician, and also handy, so it goes both ways. Thankfully, DH and dad love working together- so they don't mind helping each other out.

OMG!!! YES! Dh has been my family's handy man since day 1 of us dating! He hates even going over any of my realtives houses b/c they ALWAYS want him to "look" at something which translates into...fix it! He gets sooooo heated. Chat Icon

Re: Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

DH doesnt mind doing small favors for my family or his family, but I dont think it should be expected that a son or a son in law should be responsible for the maintenance of his parents (or his wife's parent's) house. Some parents expect it. My feeling is that if you own a house, you should be able to maintain it. If you can't, then hire people. If you can't afford to, then it may be time to move to a place that is financially and physically easier to maintain.

Re: Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

Sort of...it hasn't been as bad as when we first got married - my parents used to recruit him for all sorts of "little" jobs around their house.

It would annoy me, especially since my brother still lives at home.

Re: Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

Sometimes, but my uncle is the real handy man of the family, so luckly DH escapes most of the time. I could see how it could be annoying though.

Re: Is anyone's DH turning into your family's handy man?

We live out of town from our famiilies, so eveytime we go home it seem DH is doing something for someone. He has the ability to fix computers and satelites (the stuff that costs $$$ to call someone). It is frustrating because when we go home we just want to see our families, not work the whole time. I sometimes joke I will send the bill in the mail, one day I just might.

He spends so much time helping out with projects that he never has any "down" time anymore!
