It can give off chemicals. I am sure you can get a green carpet-go to a carpet store and ask. You should ask your neighbors not to smoke inside anymore. Babies that are exposed to cig smoke have a higher rate of SIDS, asthma and respiratory infection

It's finny you should mention this. We have Hardwood floors all throughout my downstairs but upstairs we have carpeting. This is where the baby's room will be. The carpeting is brand new (not even 2 years old) and that room has been a vacant room. No one smokes in my house, but we are not sure if we should put flooring in and take out carpet.

We were thinking of Pergo floors bc of minimal upkeep in time or just keeping the carpet.

Re: is carpenting bad for baby?

I have carpets being installed in my bedroom, as well as the baby's room. I feel carpet is fine because we both don't smoke and if the baby gets a little bigger & wants to play, crawl or walk it's a safer situation. Just my opinion!

ITA... we plan on carpeting the baby's room. Right now it's under construction, but then we're getting carpet. It's nice and soft for the baby to lay and crawl on without getting hurt. Our whole upstairs is carpeted. No one smokes and I clean and vaccum all the time

Regular carpet is fine. We all grew up with carpeting (and probably lead paint too Chat Icon Chat Icon ) and we all turned out fine. Just have the carpet installed a few weeks before the baby comes home so it can "air out". I would never spend the money on a special carpet...........total rip off IMO. Chat Icon

I personally would not use Empire. They did a HORRIBLE job installing our carpets and after just 3 years we're already starting to replace them. It's cheap stuff with poor installation. We got waaaaaaaaay nicer carpet installed beautifully from Carpet Depot and it was a great price too.

i really have to agree....

while i wouldn't use chemical cleaners to clean the rug - we all grew up with carpeting, metal tonka toys and other things that are now considered horrible for you...

you should be fine with carpeting!

Re: is carpenting bad for baby?

I know, I am so torn on what to do. I think it is a sin to rip up totally new carpeting, but I am worried about allergies.

However, neither one of us smoke, and I am a vacuum FREAK, so how much dust can accumulate? right??

We haven't made our decision yet. Honestly, I like carpet for bedrooms so much more, but my concern is allergies.

If the carpetins is brand new, I wouldn't rip it up based on the POSSIBILITY the baby will have allergies .......You can always take it out of the room if you HAVE to later on .......
If no one smokes in the room, if there is not an excessive amount of pet hair, and you keep the new carpeting clean, I don't see why you'd have a problem -

I had carpeting in my room my whole life w/ severe allergies and I was fine - The dog wasn't allowed in my room though. - And my Mother shoudl own stock in Hoover Vacuuums !! -

This is what I was going to mention... allergies. My brother took up the carpet in his DS's room because of that.

I personally do not have carpeting because we have unreliable older dogs that drive me nuts! Chat Icon

However, if you have that smoking neighbor issue, it may be a better option to have the carpet barrier. You may also consider a custom remnant area rug that fits the whole room so it's not permanent.

Re: is carpenting bad for baby?

We decided that since we were taking out the carpets in her room anyway- instead of replacing with another carpeting we would get hardwood put in- for allergy reasons and for the "look" of it too...I am glad we did.

We did put a small area rug in though too...

Why don't you just get it cleaned? When we moved in we realized there must have been cats here before because DH's face blew up. We had it deep cleaned with some allergen stuff and he has never had a problem again.

No, i am not the one with the pets or smoke from neighbors. I think that was another poster. I was just saying that I was thinking the same thing as far as carpet vs floor bc a few people told me carpet was no good.
But in my situation, honestly, I cant imagine it would be such a problem. We are in our own house, neither smoke, we do not have pets, and the carpet is brand new.

Re: is carpenting bad for baby?

I ripped up the carpet in the nursery yesterday - mainly because we have a dog and I can't stand how nasty carpets can be, no matter how much you try and clean them. We are buying the pergo wood flooring from Big Lots on Sunday because I have a coupon for Sunday only....20% off.

If anyone is interested in the coupon, I can forward the email to you!

Re: is carpenting bad for baby?

I think carpet is perfectly fine, as long as you vacuum on a regular basis you'll probably never have an issue. Besides even if you put in a floor, your still gonna have to clean that too. Plus, I think carpet in a nursery just makes the room have a warmer, more engaging feeling to it overall...perfect for babies! Especially when they start to crawl....

That's insane!!! We had Carpet Depot due Emerson's room which is around 12X14 and it cost $650 for a beautiful carpet with really thick nice padding. They did such a great job, she has the nicest carpeting in the house. Chat Icon

Oh.......didn't know you were out so far west. We have one out by me in Stony Brook. Actually, I think their address is Lake Grove. Not sure if they are a chain but if not and you wanted to take a ride out here I'm sure they install anywhere. They are off of Middle Country Road next to the JCPenny Home Store which is just east of the Smithhaven Mall. Chat Icon

Re: is carpenting bad for baby?

I bought "green" carpeting for my house. It's Mohawk brand, Smart Strand

It's also naturally stain resistant.

I'm doing everything I can to keep chemicals out of my house. Yes, we grew up with chemicals in our house, but we also grew up without ABS, seat belts, car seats, etc. Those of us who survived can say "look, I turned out OK", but what about those that were negatively affected by what we did decades ago?

Many hardwood floors have chemicals in them. The glues that hold everything together is very hazardous. That's why I researched and bought bamboo flooring that doesn't use formaldehyde in their glue.

I also used noVOC paint throughout the house.
