yes most of the time (unless it is pretty cold) it is not even a good time to ski the day after christmas!
the weather has to be below freezing for quite a few days before they can start making snow. I'm pretty sure mountains like windham or Hunter havent begun the process yet - it has been a warm fall.
Jan 7 would be a better day!

Re: is dec 7th too early for skiing?
sunday river is open now and so is mount snow - for a beginner the snow is pretty is icy and the trails are crowded because there are not many of them but they are all usually groomed
the mountains in VT. NH. and ME are making snow now but they do not usually have a lot open before christmas - a few warm days can kill a week or two of snowmaking
in early decemebr there are lots of last minute deals usually - so i would wait to check out the wether and see hwich mountains have a decent amount of trails open
