Is is normal to be sad around your baby's first birthday?

I just can't believe how fast the year went. This time last year, I was done with work. The day dd was truely the happies day of my life. I just get sad that she is getting so big and my life has been so hectic the last 2 months. I took off from work to spend the day with her and I've been melancholy.

Oh MOST definately Chat Icon ( and the 2nd and the 3rd so far for me too Chat Icon ) Bittersweet- its so exciting to see them learn new things, but so sad at the same time that they are getting more and more independent - But thats what mommies are for- helping our little ones to become individuals Chat Icon

Re: Is is normal to be sad around your baby's first birthday?

The day of my son's birth was very scary and he was taken to the NICU before we could touch him or even photograph him. The memories of all that uncertainty made me sad around the time of his birthday. Also, I kept wondering how the other babies that were there with him are doing now. I celebrated him and the fact that he is so healthy and happy but I will always wish I could say that the day he was born was wonderful in every way.

Oh it is completley normal...I went through it with my son. With me I even looked at the time that he was born and I started to cry. It's just so sad how it goes by so fast. Our babies are growing up.Chat Icon Feel better.

Re: Is is normal to be sad around your baby's first birthday?

Definitely! I felt so sad the week before his bday more than the actual day for some reason....it all just went too quickly for me but I guess thats the way it goes..they are babies for too short of a time!!

DH on the other hand couldn't wait for DS to get bigger and "play" with him, lol. He now will say "I can't wait till Johnnys 5 and can appreciate going bowling or to the movies.." and I yell at him to stop aging him in my mind, lol!

Re: Is is normal to be sad around your baby's first birthday?

YES the 1st birthday was a killer for me - I cry now when I think about it - I cried so bad the night before her party that I had puffy eyes the next day. I also cried the night before her 2nd birthday but not as bad. The first one is the hardest. My dad told me that instead of being sad I should be looking forward to the next stage as each stage is more fun than the last and he should know as he had 8 of usChat Icon

Re: Is is normal to be sad around your baby's first birthday?

I was sadder at DS first b-day then at my own 30thChat Icon

But I was so proud of him at the same time. He was hitting so many milestones at that point, and I was totally in love with the little toddler he was becoming, just like I was in love with the baby he wasChat Icon

Re: Is is normal to be sad around your baby's first birthday?

Aw megan, its normal Chat Icon

Think of all you have to look fwd to as she gets older though, her personality and sense of humor emerging, new things for her to discover.

Even though Charlie's first year was the most amazing time in my life, its only better now at 13 (almost 14) months ... I'm just amazed every day now at how smart he is becoming and what a little person he is! Hes not much of a baby anymore, but I love it. He is even sooo much more fun now. Its exciting b/c the love is stronger today than yesterday, than the day before, than the day he turned 1!!! It just keeps getting better and better and theres absolutely nothing to be sad about!!!
