I see a definate difference in my DS after he gets "sugared up" as we call itChat Icon

I don't recall where I read it , but they said it's a myth...I'm not buying it ( not w/ my DS anyway)..

Just curious if anyone elses DC gets a little crazy after eating/drinking something sugary ...

for miki, sugar does not affect her, however, my bff's child (she will be 5 in November) is DEFINITELY affected by sugar so my friend does not give her much

I think it depends on the child and how sensitive they are to sugar. My step son exhibits a MAJOR difference after eating sugar, we actually restrict his sugar intake to help him keep himself in control and focused. He is PDD-NOS and ADHD, he has trouble controlling impulses as it is, adding sugar makes it much more difficult for him.

FACT

I don't care what's out there in print, anyone who's ever been to a 3 year old's b-day party right after cake KNOWS that this is a FACTChat Icon

If you come and observe my DS after someone has given him a Flav-O-Ice ice pop, you will know that this is a fact (at least for him)

My DS bounces off the walls after he has had one of those ice pops. I threw out the ones in our freezer because of it and have to go get some of the sugar free ones!

It might be a myth for some, but for DS it's a FACT.

I don't think it affects DD that much. She might have a little more energy, but she's not bouncing off walls the way some kids do.

In both my immediate and extended family, I see it as FACT....

also see it with food dyes in my 10-year old nephew. Can be sugar-free foods but if it has a food dye in it -- watch out because he'll be bouncing shortly thereafter.

Re: Is it a fact or myth- Kids act hyper after eating sugary food...

I believe it's a myth. If you have a party, or give DC a "treat", even if it's carrot sticks, they are bouncing off the walls. Every party I've been to with DS, all of the kids are going insane.... before they have any food or sugar. I believe it's the fact that it's a treat and/or an exciting place. A child with no medical issues will maintain a fairly consistent blood sugar level. If their blood sugar level is constant, their energy level will be, too.

I get a little hyper when I have too much sugar, but that's because I'm diabetic, so medically, I actually *do* have "more energy" than the average person.

I think it depends on body chemistry - same thing along the lines of caffeine. I read that a child with ADD will be able to focus with a stimulant, other people it makes them jittery. I would say for most kids it is a fact. For mine definitely.
