Is it better to file married separately, or married jointly?

It's tax season! Any one have any ideas and opinions as to which will produce the greater tax refund, and which is the better option? Thanks in advance...

I would speak to your accountant but when I worked the CPA's never recommended filing separately unless it was a certain circumstance. Only one person can take the deductions, meaning if you have a house you cant split it.

ETA: I know the program we used had a worksheet that would show the difference if you filed jointly or seperately so they might have that and you could ask to see it.

My dad is an accountant and he always told me that 99% of the time it's better to file married jointly.

when DH and I went to file last year, my accountant asked if I had changed my name in 2005 or 2006. When I said 2005, she said that we *had* to file married.

You have to file married - but you can do it either jointly or seperately. as other posters have said, it almost never makes sense to file seperately.

We did that last year and the refund was bigger if we filed together.

Have your tax professional run it both ways. For us it was way better to file married/jointly as it is for most people.

Last year we were only married 2 months and we asked that the accountant do it both ways to check which way was better for us. If we filed separately we would have each gotten back less than $1,000.00 by filing together we almost got $6,000 back.

We have a great tax guy and he files us jointly, better in his opinion.
