I have done it before, so I think its appropriate.....if it was a super formal black gown, I would say no.....

No - take all of those stupid rules and toss them - You can wear any color with the exception of white !! -
I personally try to avoid wearing the same color as the bridesmaids too (unless they're wearing black of course) - but that's just MY hang up -

I have the same issue! Black is probably fine depending on the formality of the wedding & the dress.
