Is it just me...
or do you some times feel like you are being punished for eating healthy- I left Shop Rite tonight with five small bags of groceries and the bill was nearly $75. The cashier said WOW it costs a lot to be healthy. I think people would be more motivated to eat better if it did not cost so much more.

Re: Is it just me...
the fact that cauliflower is 4.99 a head is absurd to me
or a tiny box of raspberries are 2.99
it IS ridiculous

Re: Is it just me...
i totally agree. when i buy a salad for lunch it costs almost $10.00! meanwhile a fast food combo meal is about $5.00 bucks.. but in my opinion its worth it!

Yes.
And there have been studies done about this, especially in poor areas how the only "affordable" meals are crap.
This is directly related to how so many people who are poor and/or disabled are overweight, have diabetes, amongst other health issues.
This is a frequent topic I have run across working in human services over the years.

Re: Is it just me...
I completely agree! I try to buy fruit when its on sale. (One week I weighed my bag of grapes- came out to over $6 so I put it back!). Stawberries can be so pricey but I love them in my yogurt....and thats another thing- Greek yogurt is so expensive!
I think about all the money I spend to be healthy sometimes: gym memberships, personal training sessions, workout clothes, Weight Watchers fees (now I get to go free- yay!), healthy food, tools to eat healthy (food scales, measuring cups, healthy cookbooks).
Then again- lets look at it in a positive light: we could be spending all that money on doctor's appointments and blood pressure medication!

Re: Is it just me...
You are NOT alone!!
DH and I complain about this all of the time.
A small bag of grapes cost me almost $8!! A small container of raspberries cost me $3 and it's barely a snack for me. A small 3 serving bag of pop chips is $3 but a large family sized 12 serving bag of generic chips (doritos, ruffles) is also $3! Don't even get me started on meat. Produce and organic meats are SO expensive.
And I'm also annoyed I have to spend $40 for physical therapy per week for two months... and DH's cycling clothes are SUPER expensive. I need a knee brace, those are expensive. And my brand new, new balance sneakers are already destroyed from daily use.
Between the food prices, the workout dvds, the gym/class fees, doctors fees, new sneakers, etc... it costs so much to be healthy!!

I totally agree with this. I consult in some poor areas, and can not find one healthy place to eat. And then I pass by McDonalds, all packed, all with their 1.00 menus!!!

Re: Is it just me...
Organic meat/dairy is super $$ - I have to say
it def encourages me to cut back on my
portions, want to stretch that dollar with the
expsnive healthy foods. But your soo right
its drains the wallet to eat smart healthy
foods. I scour for coupons!

Re: Is it just me...
I buy a lot of frozen produce for that reason. I only buy fresh for certain items or if it is on sale. DH and DD1 only get grapes when they're on sale, so expensive. Apples tend to be inexpensive, so we buy a lot of those.
Meat I stock up on when it's on sale. My grocery bills from eating healthier have nearly tripled.

Re: Is it just me...
I find the opposite actually. But I live in Queens and I go to the outdoor/indoor fruit stores that are much cheaper.
I do find though, that the fruit and veggies on sale are usually the ones in season and the best tasting. So I just buy what is on sale.

What about meat, eggs, nuts and dairy? It is not the fruit that puts the bill over the top if you shop sales. I just think of all of the families that are on tight budgets, especially in under served areas, that really have no choice but to shop by the cost of items and not the quality.

Re: Is it just me...
I'm sure not everyone has a Giunta's near them; but its the only place I buy my fruits and vegetables from.
I try to avoid at all costs buying them at the supermarket.......b/c I pay double the price.
It helps!
